Aside from celebrating the 1,000 vehicle produced at its plant in Pegoh, Melaka, EP Manufacturing (EPMB) has also revealed some key details on future models. Among those, it has confirmed that the GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid will join the H6 Hybrid that was launched in October, with production starting in April.

Like its larger sibling, the Jolion has been a long time coming. It was launched in Thailand back in November 2021 and was almost immediately sighted in Malaysia, hinting at a local introduction. It, like the H6, was earmarked for a 2022 launch but this was pushed back as the company focused on getting the Ora Good Cat into showrooms. Last we heard, the Jolion was set to enter production in 2023, and a unit was even shown at that year’s Malaysia Autoshow, but this plan obviously never came to fruition.

Nearly two years later, the Jolion is finally set to enter Malaysia, although it isn’t yet clear if it will be the current crossover or the Jolion Pro already on sale in markets such as Australia – an entirely different model sold in China as the Haval Chitu.

No matter which version makes it here, it will be powered by GWM’s hybrid powertrain consisting of a 95 PS/125 Nm 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine (rather than the H6 Hybrid’s turbo mill), a 156 PS/250 Nm electric motor and a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). Total system output is rated at 190 PS and 375 Nm of torque, slightly lower than the H6 Hybrid’s 243 PS and 530 Nm.

The original Jolion’s striking, curvaceous exterior design features a large hexagonal grille and distinctive L-shaped head- and taillights, the former with large triangular indicators. The Jolion Pro, on the other hand, is more conventional and takes after the H6, with slimmer headlights and full-width taillights. Adding some aggression is a sporty bodykit that includes fake twin tailpipes.

GWM also sells the Haval Jolion Pro in markets such as Australia

Inside, however, the two cars are practically identical, sporting the same horizontal dashboard with a seven-inch digital instrument display and a freestanding 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, plus a tall centre console with a rotary gear selector.

Aside from the Jolion, GWM will also start assembling the Wey 80 at the EPMB plant closer to the end of 2025. The MPV, previewed at the recent Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show (KLIMS), is “catered to the ASEAN market” and will compete with the all-conquering Toyota Alphard and Vellfire.

  • GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid previewed in Malaysia – X50 and HR-V rival; 190 PS, 375 Nm; launching this year

GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid previewed in Malaysia – X50 and HR-V rival; 190 PS, 375 Nm; launching this year

In addition to the Haval H6, Great Wall Motor will also introduce the Haval Jolion in Malaysia by this year, according to an official representative. The B-segment SUV was recently previewed here in hybrid form with a total system output of 190 PS and 375 Nm of torque.

The HEV powertrain responsible for these outputs is made up of a 1.5 litre NA four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 95 PS at 6,000 rpm and 125 Nm from 4,400 to 5,200 rpm. The multi-point fuel injection mill is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to drive the front wheels, while an electric motor chips in with its 156 PS (115 kW) and 250 Nm.

Dimension-wise, the Jolion is 4,472 mm long, 1,841 mm wide, 1,619 mm tall and its wheelbase measures 2,700 mm. That makes it larger than other popular B-segment SUVs like the Proton X50 (4,330 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, 1,609 mm tall, 2,600 mm wheelbase) as well as the Honda HR-V (4,330 to 4,385 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,590 mm tall, 2,610 mm wheelbase).

Final specifications aren’t available just yet, but this example sports LED headlamps with a distinctive daytime running light signature, 18-inch alloy wheels (with 225/55 profile tyres), LED taillights and a sunroof.

Meanwhile the interior features a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather upholstery, automatic air-conditioning, an electronic parking brake (with auto brake hold) and a dashcam. The front radar sensor and controls on the steering wheel also indicate the presence of advanced driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.

The Jolion has already been launched in Thailand, where it is offered in three variants (Tech, Pro and Ultra). For now, GWM Thailand’s official website only lists the price of the Ultra at 999,000 baht (RM131,688). We’ll need to wait for GWM Malaysia to detail available variants and official pricing, but given what you’re looking at here, would you pick the Jolion over its rivals?

  • 2023 GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid spotted – B-segment SUV with 1.5T, 7DCT; launching in Malaysia soon?

2023 GWM Haval Jolion Hybrid spotted – B-segment SUV with 1.5T, 7DCT; launching in Malaysia soon?

When Great Wall Motor (GWM) announced its entry into Malaysia back in July, we were told to expect the company’s first products from the fourth quarter of this year. Among the models set to be launched include the Ora Good Cat EV as well as two Haval SUVs, namely the H6 and Jolion.

In this post, we’re focusing on the B-segment Jolion, which has been spotted in Malaysia yet again. As with past sightings, this blue example is uncamouflaged, although it’s a little different as this packs a hybrid powertrain judging by the ‘HEV’ badges – the previous cars were white and lacked those badges.

The Haval Jolion Hybrid is something we’re familiar with, as the model made its global debut in Thailand last November. In terms of specifications, the SUV is powered by a 1.5 litre NA four-cylinder petrol engine that is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with an integrated electric motor. The total system output of this setup is 190 PS and 375 Nm of torque.

Visually, the hybrid variant is differentiated from the non-hybrid by its pinned grille insert (dubbed the Star Matrix) and blue accents on its prominent headlamps, but otherwise looks very similar. This car comes with 18-inch wheels, leather upholstery, automatic air-conditioning (with rear vents), a seven-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

In Thailand, the Jolion Hybrid also comes standard with six airbags, stability control and a range of driver assistance systems. These include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and braking, a reversing assistant and park assist for parallel, perpendicular and even diagonal parking.

According to Headlightmag, the Jolion is offered in three variants – HEV Tech, HEV Pro and HEV Ultra – with prices ranging from 879,000 to 999,000 baht (RM109,077 to RM123,968).

When the Jolion is launched here, it will have no shortage of rivals, with the likes of the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Peugeot 2008 and Mazda CX-30 already on sale. We’ll have to wait for GWM Malaysia to provide further details, including a launch date and pricing, but for now, does the Jolion appear to be an attractive proposition? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

  • Haval Jolion Hybrid makes world premiere in Thailand – CKD, 193 hp, 375 Nm, priced from RM100k?

Haval Jolion Hybrid makes world premiere in Thailand – CKD, 193 hp, 375 Nm, priced from RM100k?

Soon after it was revealed that the Haval Jolion would be sold in Thailand, the B-segment SUV has made its debut in the Land of Smiles. The car was previewed to local media in hybrid form at the Rayong plant, marking the world premiere for the petrol-electric model.

The Jolion Hybrid is powered by a 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired to an electric motor and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Compared to the H6 Hybrid, the smaller model has lower outputs to the tune of 50 hp and 155 Nm of torque, although its 190 hp and 375 Nm total is still nothing to be sniffed at and knocks the 131 PS/253 Nm Honda HR-V e:HEV into a cocked hat.

As you can see from these Headlight Magazine images, the hybrid’s front end has been significantly remodelled over the standard Jolion. The full-LED headlights and vertical daytime running lights are now fused into a single unit and feature an array of light strips that double as indicators.

The “Star Matrix” grille is also now wider and flow into the lamps, and the result is a look reminiscent of the Concept H that previewed the Jolion last year. The rest of the sleek body, including the inverted L-shaped taillights, remains unchanged – as does the interior with its minimalist dashboard, seven-inch digital instrument cluster, 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen and tall centre console.

Safety-wise, the Jolion Hybrid will come with six airbags, stability control and a whole host of driver assistance systems. These include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane centring assist, blind spot monitoring, rear collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and braking, a BMW-style reversing assistant and park assist for parallel, perpendicular and even diagonal parking.

Full details and pricing will only be revealed later this month but the Jolion Hybrid will be available in HEV Pro and HEV Ultra variants, expected to be priced between 800,000 baht (RM100,400) and 1,000,000 baht (RM125,500). This will enable it to undercut the 1,145,000 baht (RM143,700) H6.

  • Haval Jolion SUV launching in Thailand this month – Honda HR-V rival with hybrid, priced from RM100k

Haval Jolion SUV launching in Thailand this month – Honda HR-V rival with hybrid, priced from RM100k

The launch of the new Honda HR-V in Thailand is still fresh but already the B-segment SUV is about to encounter some stiff competition. No, it doesn’t come from Toyota or any of its other Japanese rivals, but from China – it’s the Haval Jolion, set to be introduced in the Land of Smiles this month.

For context, the Jolion will be the third vehicle brought in by Great Wall Motors (GWM), after the Ora Good Cat and the larger Haval H6. The crossover will be hoping to emulate the success of its sibling, which has reportedly become the best-selling C-segment SUV in Thailand.

Like the H6, the Jolion (the name translates to “first love” in Mandarin) is based on GWM’s modular Lemon platform, allowing for the fitment of electrified powertrains. The fresh exterior design features Haval’s hexagonal grille, sharp headlights, striking vertical daytime running lights and L-shaped taillights.

Inside, you’ll find a minimalist interior with a tall centre console and large freestanding displays. The centre touchscreen measures up to 10.25 inches across, integrates the air-conditioning controls and is available with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Expect the Jolion to get the H6’s hybrid powertrain, which pairs a 169 PS/285 Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 130 kW (177 PS) electric motor to produce a heady 243 PS and 530 Nm of torque. All this will likely be sent to the front wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Jolion should also get the H6’s suite of driver assists, including autonomous emergency braking, Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability, blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition. Built at the former GM plant in Rayong, the car is expected to be priced between 800,000 baht (RM100,400) and 1,000,000 baht (RM125,500) according to Headlight Magazine, undercutting the 1,145,000 baht (RM143,700) H6.
