The B-SUV market, one of the most competitive in Malaysia, welcomes a new player today. Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has officially launched the 2023 Hyundai Creta. A CBU import from Indonesia, the Creta facelift is powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engine and is priced at RM149,888 on the road excluding insurance.

What do you get for the money? Let’s inspect. At 4,315 mm long and 1,790 mm wide, the Creta has a similar sized footprint to the Honda HR-V (which is 70 mm longer), and its 2,610 mm wheelbase matches Honda’s popular benchmark. Having a ‘conventional B-SUV’ size means that the Creta is larger than stablemate Kona, which is more of a Euro-flavoured crossover.

The Creta’s boot is sizeable at 416 litres, which is a fair bit larger than the Proton X50‘s 330L and the Perodua Ativa‘s 380L. With the 60:40 rear seats folded, capacity jumps to 1,384 litres. The wheels are 17-inch items (rare to see a single-tone wheel these days) with 215/60 Kumho Solus rubber and there’s a full-sized steel spare wheel under the boot floor.

The Creta’s design is far from generic, offering something for those who want to be different. The Korean firm currently has two corporate faces in rotation – one is the ‘Staria-style’ with the full-width LED signature and square mouth (also used on sedans), and the other is the Parametric Jewel look as seen on the Tucson SUV and Santa Cruz truck. The Creta wears the latter, with LED daytime running lights that concealed within the grille. The split tail lamps and silver rear pillars are unique.

“The Hyundai Creta targets those who desire individuality, who wish to stand out and break free from the norm. Its Sensuous Sportiness design language endows it with unmistakable presence and style. At the same time, it is equipped with all the technology and convenience features to perfectly complement active daily lifestyles,” said Jeffrey Gan, Sime Darby Motors’ MD of retail and distribution for Malaysia.

Under the hood is a Smartstream G 1.5 litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with 115 PS and 144 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Torque goes to the front wheels through an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT, Hyundai’s term for CVT) with steering paddles. There are four selectable drive modes at the driver’s disposal – Eco, Normal, Sport and Smart. 0-100 km/h is done in 12 seconds and top speed is 170 km/h.

There’s just a single spec called Plus, and it comes with goodies such as a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel; an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and voice recognition; single-zone auto air-con with rear vents; keyless entry and push start; and an electronic parking brake with auto hold.

Safety wise, the Creta comes with six airbags and Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of active safety features. The pack includes Forward and Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Following Assist, Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, Safe Exit Warning and High Beam Assist. This SUV has five stars in the ASEAN NCAP crash test. There are also two Isofix child seat mounts.

Once again, the 2023 Hyundai Creta is priced at RM149,888, and HSDM is including a free extended warranty package of five years or 300,000 km, as well as three years/50,000 km free service for the first 150 buyers. Colours options include Galaxy Blue Pearl, Titan Grey Metallic, Midnight Black Pearl, Creamy White Pearl and the signature Dragon Red Pearl you see here. What do you think of the Creta’s looks and package?

    Hyundai Creta

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has opened the order books for the Hyundai Creta, following a number of sightings locally on Malaysian roads, most recently last week. Orders are now being taken at all authorised Hyundai sales outlets nationwide, as well as online.

The Click-To-Buy page on the Hyundai Malaysia website reveals that the Creta will make its Malaysian debut in a sole 1.5 Plus variant, offered with a choice of five exterior colours – Galaxy Blue Pearl, Midnight Black Pearl, Titan Gray Metallic, Creamy White Pearl and Dragon Red Pearl – and a black interior.

Included on the website is a specifications list for the Creta, which confirms the equipment that will be in the B-segment crossover. Powering the Creta for the Malaysian market is a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol MPI engine that is rated to produce 115 PS at 6,300 rpm and 144 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm, with outputs sent to the front wheels via a Smartstream IVT continuously variable transmission.

Rolling stock is a set of 17-inch alloy wheels shod in 215/60 tyres, and this includes a full size spare tyre of the same dimensions on a steel wheel. For exterior equipment, the Malaysian-market Creta gets LED headlamps with LED daytime running lights, along with LED combination tail lamps.

The Creta gets fabric upholstery with a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob. Infotainment is provided by an eight-inch touchscreen unit with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay while the driver gets a 10.25-inch instrument display, according to the official release.

In terms of driver assistance, the Creta gets the Hyundai SmartSense suite of assistance systems which includes forward and blind spot collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, lane following assist, leading vehicle departure alert, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, safe exit warning and high beam assist. The 2022 Hyundai Creta has scored a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating.

While HSDM has posted the aforementioned specifications for the Creta that is soon to arrive in our market, pricing has yet to be revealed. For some indication, the Creta sells for between 291.3 and 408.3 million rupiah (about RM86k and RM120k) in Indonesia, while in Thailand it is listed from 949k to 999k baht (about RM122k to RM129k).

Once again, orders are now being taken at all authorised Hyundai sales outlets nationwide, as well as online.

Creta apa ni? Hyundai Creta, bro. Reader JJ Chang spotted this unfamiliar SUV on our roads and while he did not disclose the location, the background looks like Tanjung Tokong. Thais holidaying in Penang like the Shinawatras? Nope, the car has Malaysian number plates.

We contacted Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) but the distributor declined to comment on the Creta. It’s safe to assume then that HSDM does indeed have plans for this B-segment SUV, although we’re not sure if it will culminate in market introduction.

Pricing is always an issue when it comes to non-national mass market brands introducing new products here. It’s hard to match modern day Perodua in content and equipment when you have higher cost and lower volume. But at least the Creta is made in Indonesia (since January 2022), and can be brought in via AFTA, ASEAN’s free trade area rules with lower duty. The HMMI-made Creta has since been launched in Thailand.

The Creta is Hyundai’s B-segment crossover for emerging markets, based on the Kia Seltos and positioned below the more compact European-flavoured Kona in the lineup. This is the facelifted second-generation model, sporting a full-width Parametric Jewel grille like the latest Tucson. This means the LED daytime running lights are neatly hidden within the grille, with the main LED headlights sitting independently on the bumper.

On the sides, you’ll find prominent fender creases, plus a silver roof and C-pillar trim that creates a “floating roof” effect without the roof being in another colour. Those split triangular taillights are very distinct, weird even. The car you see here has its Hyundai and Creta rear badging taped up, which is strange as the front logo is naked.

Looks a bit like the Perodua Ativa from certain angles? At 4,315 mm long and 1,790 mm wide, the Creta is 250 mm longer and 80 mm wider than the Perodua, which means it’s a fair bit larger. The 2,610 mm wheelbase is 85 mm longer than the Ativa’s. The Creta’s dash has a waterfall-style design, like on the Tucson and Santa Cruz. It’s rendered in a nice two-tone in this unit, which also has light-coloured seats.

Thai-spec cars get an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, Qi wireless charger, automatic air con with rear vents and a comprehensive safety package. The latter includes six airbags and Hyundai’s SmartSense driver assist suite including door opening warning. The higher of the two specs (SEL) adds on LED and ambient interior lighting plus a panoramic sunroof.

Under the Creta’s hood is a 1.5 litre naturally-aspirated engine producing 115 PS at 6,300 rpm and 144 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Power goes to the front wheels via an Intelligent Variable Transmission (iVT), Hyundai name for CVT. In India and Indonesia, the SUV also comes with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Creta is priced from 949,000 baht to 999,000 baht in Thailand, which translates to RM115,749 to RM121,848. What do you think of the Hyundai Creta at those prices? For reference, the base 1.5L NA Honda HR-V is priced at RM114,800, and the range goes all the way to RM140,800 for the RS e:HEV hybrid.

2022 Hyundai Creta facelift launched in Indonesia – 4 CKD variants, 1.5L NA; priced from RM81k to RM116k

Well that was quick. The Hyundai Creta has officially made its global unveil in Indonesia, where it will go on display at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) starting November 11.

Four variants are on offer, beginning with the entry-level Active at 279 million rupiah (RM81k), followed by the Trend at 299 million rupiah (RM87k), Style at 359 million rupiah (RM105k) and range-topping Prime at 397.5 million rupiah (RM116k). Production takes place at a newly established plant in Cikarang (West Java), operated by PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI).

All models share the same Smartstream G1.5 naturally-aspirated petrol engine, making 115 PS at 6,300 rpm and 144 Nm of torque at 4,500 rpm. Drive is sent to the front wheels through Hyundai’s own iVT (intelligent variable transmission) or a six-speed manual. A rotary dial allows drivers to choose between four drive modes (eco, comfort, smart and sport), as well as two traction modes – sand and mud.

In terms of size, the updated B-segment SUV measures 4,315 mm long, 1,790 mm wide, 1,630 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,610 mm. It’s pretty lightweight, tipping the scales at 1,165 kg (+10 kg for the full spec variant), and they all sit on 17-inch diamond cut alloy wheels wrapped with 215/60 profile tyres.

There are seven exterior colours to choose from – Creamy White Pearl, Galaxy Blue Pearl, Titan Grey Metallic, Magnetic Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Pearl, Glowing Silver Metallic, and the exclusive Dragon Red Pearl. The parametric jewel grille is new and standard across the board.

Depending on the variant, the Creta gets LED DRLs hidden within the edges of the grille, LED reflector headlights, keyless entry system with push-start button, and LED combination tail lights.

Interior appointments include either an eight-inch touchscreen display as standard, though the speaker count range from four to eight (the latter by Bose) depending on the trim. There’s also a rear-view camera, shift paddles, panoramic sunroof, wireless charging tray for Qi-compatible devices, ambient mood lighting, ventilated seats, and single-zone automatic climate control with integrated air purification system.

On the safety side of things, there is Hyundai SmartSense, but not the entire suite. Upwards of the Trend variant, customers get tyre pressure monitoring system and driver rear-view monitor as standard, while the Style adds on blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assist, safe exit warning, and rear occupant alert.

The most expensive Prime variant adds forward collision-avoidance assist (AEB), lane keeping assist, lane following assist, and high beam assist. Not bad for a B-segment SUV, really. What do you think?
