2021 Mazda 3 Turbo pricing revealed for the US – 46% more expensive than the base model; 250 hp, 434 Nm

Nearly a month after the 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo made its debut in the United States, the company has now revealed official pricing for the new model, along with a launch film and image gallery. The Turbo is offered in sedan and hatchback body styles, with both sporting the same SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

As reported previously, the mill develops 250 hp and 434 Nm with premium 93 octane fuel, or 227 hp and 420 Nm when running on regular 87 octane fuel. A SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic is the only available transmission pairing here, with Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system also being part of the drivetrain. Performance and efficiency figures will only be revealed closer to the start of deliveries by the end of this year.

For the US market, the model is known as the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo, which will come as standard with a MZD Connect infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display, a Bose 12-speaker sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, Active Driving Display (head-up display), dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, keyless entry and start and the i-Activsense suite of safety and driver assistance systems.

Regardless of body styles, customers will get 18-inch black aluminium alloy wheels, gloss black side mirrors, “Turbo” badges, LED headlamps and daytime running lights, with the sedan also getting a gloss black front grille and lower front bumper decoration.

The company also offers an optional Premium Plus package that adds on items like a gloss black rear lip spoiler for the sedan, while the hatchback receives a gloss black rear roof spoiler and front air dam.

The optional package also throws in additional system to the i-Activsense suite like Rear Smart City Brake Support with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking as well as Traffic Jam Assist. If that isn’t enough body components, there’s also an aero kit upgrade for the hatchback that consists of a rear diffuser and side sill extensions.

Aside from the new Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo model, there’s also a new base engine option for the 2021 model year – a SkyActiv-G 2.0 litre four-pot (155 hp and 203 Nm) – that joins the existing non-turbocharged 2.5 litre mill (186 hp and 252 Nm) with optional all-wheel drive.

Pricing-wise, the 2021 Mazda 3 range starts at USD20,500 (RM86,243) for the Mazda 3 2.0 FWD, but if you want the Turbo, be prepared to pay a USD9,400 (RM39,546), or 46%, premium. Mind you, the USD29,900 (RM125,789) sum is for the sedan, with the hatchback costing an additional USD1,000 (RM4,207).

The aforementioned aero kit will set you back an additional USD1,075 (RM4,522) for the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo hatchback with the Premium Plus package, or USD1,900 (RM7,993) for models without it. It gets even pricier with the optional BBS 18-inch gloss black forged wheels, as each wheel costs USD918.95 (RM3,866).

Mazda also offers a selection of premium paint finishes that start at USD395 (RM1,662) for Snowflake White Pearl Mica, which is followed by Machine Grey Metallic at USD495 (RM2,083) and Soul Red Crystal at USD595 (RM2,504).

Tick every single option, and a fully kitted Turbo hatchback in fancy red carries a retail price of USD39,095.80 (RM164,534.67). That makes it even more expensive than 2020 Civic Type R (306 hp and 400 Nm) that starts at USD36,955 (RM155,543) before options, although you do get more torque with the Mazda.

For USD4,700 (RM19,782) less than a Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo, you can get a 2020 Civic Si Sedan or Coupe that has a base price of USD25,200. The affordability comes with less power, as the smaller-displacement 1.5 litre turbo-four makes 205 hp and 260 Nm, although you do get a six-speed manual to play with.

2021 Mazda 3 Turbo announced for the US – 2.5 litre turbo-four with 250 hp and 434 Nm; 6-speed auto, AWD

As announced earlier, the 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo has finally been revealed for the United States, with sales set to begin by the end of this year. The new model will be available in two body styles – hatchback and sedan – both powered by a SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.

The turbo engine, which is already in use in the Mazda 6, CX-5 and CX-9, develops 227 hp and 420 Nm of torque when running on regular 87 octane fuel. However, with premium 93 octane fuel powering it, those figures are even higher at 250 hp and 434 Nm. Don’t let the figures fool you into believing this to be an MPS model, because it certainly isn’t.

As a result, the Mazda 3 has the upper hand over the Honda Civic in the US, although the Civic does have a smaller-capacity engine by comparison – a 1.5 litre turbo-four – that makes 174 hp and 220 Nm, or 205 hp and 260 Nm in the Civic Si. Moving even higher up to the Civic Type R with a 2.0 litre turbo-four that makes 306 hp and 400 Nm, the Mazda 3 still outputs more torque.

The SkyActiv-G mill is paired with a SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission and Mazda’s i-Activ all-wheel drive system, but performance and efficiency figures have yet to be announced for now.

For the US market, the new model will be sold as the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo, which comes standard with a MZD Connect infotainment system with an 8.8-inch display, a Bose 12-speaker sound system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, Active Driving Display (head-up display), dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, keyless entry and start and the i-Activsense suite of safety and driver assistance systems.

Both body styles will also come equipped with 18-inch black aluminium alloy wheels, gloss black side mirrors, “Turbo” badges, LED headlamps and daytime running lights, with the sedan also getting a gloss black front grille and lower front bumper decoration.

Customers who spring for the Premium Plus package will gain more aesthetic enhancements like a gloss black rear lip spoiler for the sedan, while the hatchback receives a gloss black rear roof spoiler and front air dam. The optional package also throws in additional system to the i-Activsense suite like Rear Smart City Brake Support with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking as well as Traffic Jam Assist.

Aside from the new turbo engine, the Mazda 3 also gets a new powertrain configuration for the 2021 model year – a SkyActiv-G 2.0 litre four-pot (155 hp and 203 Nm) – that joins the existing non-turbocharged 2.5 litre mill (186 hp and 252 Nm) with optional all-wheel drive. Pricing for the 2021 Mazda 3 will be announced at a later date.

    2021 Mazda 3 Turbo specs confirmed – 2.5L turbo four-cylinder; 227 hp and 420 Nm; six-speed auto and AWD

The 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo was teased several days ago, with Mazda USA announcing an official debut set for July 8. However, we won’t need to wait that long for more details, as Mazda Mexico has released a video that contains vital information about the turbocharged model.

It is confirmed that the new model will be powered by a SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 227 hp and 420 Nm of torque, which is more than the Honda Civic with its smaller-displacement 1.5 litre turbo-four that offers 171 hp and 220 Nm – it also beats the Civic Type R (306 hp and 400 Nm) in terms of torque but not horsepower. The SkyActiv-G mill is paired with a SkyActiv-Drive six-speed torque converter automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system to send drive to all four wheels.

These figures and overall setup are pretty much identical to what you’ll find in the CX-9 and CX-5, both of which are offered in Malaysia currently. As for performance and efficiency, we’ll have to wait for the official reveal to find out details like the zero to 100 km/h time, top speed and fuel economy.

    2021 Mazda 3 Turbo specs confirmed – 2.5L turbo four-cylinder; 227 hp and 420 Nm; six-speed auto and AWD

For the Mexican market, the Mazda 3 Turbo will come 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels, seven airbags, an MZD Connect infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, automatic LED headlamps, an electric sunroof, blind spot monitoring, electrochromic side mirrors, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, leather upholstery and shift paddles.

The model will be offered there in two hatchback variants, with the S Grand Touring being priced at 489,900 Mexican pesos (RM94,060), while the Signature goes for 529,900 Mexican pesos (RM101,742). The Mazda 3 is currently available in two non-turbocharged, hatchback variants – i Sport and i Grand Touring – in Mexico, both with a regular SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre four-pot (186 hp and 252 Nm) and front-wheel drive.

Bringing up the pricing for those variants, you’ll see that the turbocharged versions demand quite a premium when roughly compared, as the base i Sport that comes with only a six-speed manual retails at 379,900 Mexican pesos (RM72,886), while the i Grand Touring (six-speed auto only) is 429,900 Mexican pesos (RM82,479). Should (and if) we get the Mazda 3 Turbo in Malaysia, this rather large price gap, which extends to the SkyActiv-X versions, should be expected.

  • 2021 Mazda 3 teased with turbo power – July 8 debut

It’s finally happening! The fourth-generation Mazda 3 looks set to receive a turbocharged engine for the 2021 model year, according to a teaser posted on Mazda USA’s YouTube page. The link to the short clip was also used in several replies the company posted on Twitter, which were accompanied by the caption: “power comes to those who wait.”

If you’re expecting further details, the teaser video doesn’t really provide much aside from the sound of an engine being revved and a launch date set for July 8. However, the much-anticipated model is tipped to be powered by a SkyActiv-G 2.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit that is already being used for the CX-5, CX-9 and Mazda 6.

No output figures for now, but the mill is expected to serve up 250 hp and 420 Nm of torque, which is the same as the Mazda 6 sold in North America. Keep in mind that those figures are with 93 octane fuel, and you get 227 hp with 87 octane fuel over there. The engine will likely be paired with a six-speed automatic driving the front wheels, with the option of an all-wheel drive system.

The addition of turbocharging to the latest Mazda 3 has generated a lot of hype, with many hoping for a revival of the high-performance “MPS” nameplate. Sadly, this won’t be the case as the Japanese carmaker has stated time and time again that it has no plans to do so. Nonetheless, are you excited for a Mazda 3 turbo?

2021 Mazda 3 to receive turbo AWD powertrain: report

The latest Mazda 3 is set to receive a turbocharged engine for the 2021 model year, according to Jalopnik. Screenshots the website received from a source noted that the more potent powertrain will be offered on both sedan and hatchback bodystyles, and be paired exclusively to all-wheel-drive and an automatic gearbox.

Drawing from its current powertrain selection suggests the use of the turbocharged 2.5 litre inline-four petrol unit that serves in the CX-5 2.5 Turbo and CX-9 with 228 hp and 420 Nm of torque, also paired with all-wheel-drive. There is a 2.0 litre turbo engine also in a Mazda, though that is in the Mazda 3 TCR customer race car, in which it outputs 350 hp and 490 Nm of torque.

This likely isn’t going to be a replacement for the Mazda 3 MPS, as said screenshots identify the turbocharged variant as ‘MAZDA3 HB PP TURBO’ which suggests it is to be an additional to the regular line-up, rather than an all-out performance model.

For this particular entry, ‘HB’ should denote hatchback, while ‘turbo’ is self-explanatory. It remains to be seen what ‘PP’ stands for, though this could be a US-market specific trim level identifier. As much as some would love to see the mainstream return of the rotary, PP probably won’t stand for ‘peripheral port’.

A successor to the MPS was rumoured in 2013, though ultimately that notion was quashed by the manufacturer itself. For comparison, the MPS hatchback made 256 hp at 5,500 rpm and 380 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm from its turbocharged MZR 2.3 litre DISI engine, driving the front wheels though a six-speed manual transmission.
