Mazda distributor in Malaysia, Bermaz has launched the 2023 Mazda CX-30 that is offered in four trim levels. This is the third locally assembled (CKD) from Mazda for the Malaysian market, after the CX-5 and the CX-8. All three CKD models are produced at the Inokom assembly plant in Kulim, Kedah.

The range of four trim variants offered begin with 2.0L 2WD Standard at RM128,109, on to the 2.0L 2WD High at RM136,109, the 2.0L 2WD High Plus at RM146,109, topping out with the 2.0L 2WD High Plus Premium at RM156,109; prices are on-the-road without insurance.

In comparison to the fully imported 2022 Ignite Edition variants of the CX-30, the start of the CKD range is RM17k lower, while the top CKD variant is now 13k less than the Ignite Edition variant of the 2.0G High; the AWD driveline is no longer available in this CKD guise.

All four variants are powered by the 2.0 litre Skyactiv-G naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 162 hp at 6,000 rpm and 213 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm, with outputs sent to a six-speed automatic transmission; all variants of the locally assembled 2023 CX-30 are front-wheel-drive. Top speed for all variants is a claimed 196 km/h.

This means the 2023 CX-30 CKD differs from the outgoing iteration in no longer offering the options of the 1.8 litre diesel engine, the AWD driveline and the Ignite Edition trim variant. According to Bermaz, there are currently no plans for the CX-30 CKD in Malaysia to be sold with the 1.8 diesel or 2.5 litre petrol powertrains.

All variants roll on 18-inch alloy wheels shod in 215/55R18 tyres, save for the base 2.0L Standard that runs 16-inch alloys on 215/65R16 tyres. All variants get a spare wheel measuring 185/65R16.

Exterior equipment for the 2.0L Standard variant includes LED headlamps with automatic functionality and bulb-type daytime running lights, while the upper three variants get automatic LED headlamps with signature illumination, and LED tail lamps with signature illumination.

The top variant High Plus Premium variant is the only one to get a power sunroof, while variants bar the base variant get a powered tailgate and four parking sensors each, front and rear.

Inside, all variants get a multi-function steering wheel and cruise control (the base variant does without paddle shifters), while the top variant gets a frameless interior rear view mirror with self-dimming; the intermediate High and High Plus variants get a self-dimming rear view mirror. All variants receive the seven-inch multi-info display with colour projection HUD.

Air-conditioning is via manual control in the base variant, while the upper three variants get dual-zone automatic climate control as well as rear air vents.

The base variant gets manually adjusted driver and front passenger seat, while the upper three variants get electric adjustment and memory presets for the driver and manual adjustment for the front passenger.

On the infotainment front, all variants get an 8.8-inch display accessed via the Commander Control interface, supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; all get eight speakers and two USB ports. The top variant gets a 360-degree view monitor, while all others get a reverse camera with guide lines.

Mazda CX-30 CKD launching in Malaysia in 2022 – production slated to start in December this year

According to investor reports prepared by AmInvestment Bank and Public Investment Bank, Bermaz Auto (BAuto) has apparently been given the green light from Mazda Japan to begin its third local assembly (CKD) programme involving the Mazda CX-30 SUV this year. The company currently makes the CX-5 and CX-8 locally at the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah.

UPDATE: A source within BAuto told us that the Mazda CX-30 CKD will only arrive in 2022. The post has been updated accordingly.

It was previously reported that BAuto planned to introduce a new locally-assembled Mazda SUV during its current 2021 financial year (FY2021), which runs from May 1, 2020 until April 30, 2021. BAuto CEO Datuk Francis Lee confirmed in an interview that the Inokom facility would be upgraded with an investment of RM200 million to accommodate the new CKD model.

At the time, it wasn’t known what SUV would be added to the production line-up, with the CX-30 and MX-30 being notable candidates. With this latest bit of news, it appears the former is the one that has been picked, although Lee did say in the past that a mild hybrid version of the MX-30 is on the way, along with the new BT-50.

The details mentioned in each report do differ from one another, with Public Investment Bank claiming production of the CX-30 at the Inokom plant will only begin in December this year, indicating a launch should happen in 2022.

Meanwhile, AmInvestment Bank says the new CKD model will be launched in the second half of 2021 and expects it to be cheaper by as much as RM15,000 compared to the fully-imported (CBU) offering we have now. However, a BAuto source informed us that this isn’t true, so don’t expect the CX-30 CKD to go on sale this year.

The CX-30 is currently being offered in three petrol variants – 2.0G, 2.0G High and 2.0G High AWD – with prices ranging from RM144,759 to RM170,459. These figures are on-the-road without insurance and factor in the ongoing sales tax relief (50% for CBU cars). There’s also a sole diesel option, the 1.8D High – that goes for RM167,674.

Based on the AmInvestment Bank’s claims, a RM15,000 price reduction, when assumed to be across the board, would see the CX-30 range goes for between RM129,759 and RM155,459. That should make the SUV, which slots in between the CX-3 and CX-5, a lot more appealing to customers.

Bermaz Auto planning for Mazda CX-30 CKD – MX-30 mild hybrid and all-new BT-50 in Malaysia by 2021

Earlier this year, it was reported that Bermaz Auto planned to introduce a new locally-assembled (CKD) Mazda SUV during its 2021 financial year (FY2021), which runs from May 1, 2020 until April 30, 2021.

While the company didn’t refer to any specific model, there were two possible candidates, namely the MX-30 and CX-30, the latter of which is already available here in fully-imported (CBU) form. However, those reports came out in February before the implementation of the movement control order (MCO) to curb the spread of Covid-19, so how has the company adjusted its plans?

In an episode of The Breakfast Grille by BFM, which aired on August 13, Bermaz Auto CEO Datuk Francis Lee discussed the company’s current status as well as its future plans, touching upon the abovementioned topic and more.

On the matter of the new CKD Mazda SUV, Lee confirmed a cash injection of RM200 million into the Inokom plant in Kulim, Kedah where CKD Mazdas – currently the CX-5 and CX-8 – are made. Bermaz Auto owns 29% of the Inokom plant and will fork out about RM20 million from the RM200 million to invest in the expansion of the facility.

“We are always looking for more CKD models as I mentioned earlier, but of course during this pandemic, things move a bit slower than normal. But we’re still not giving up yet, we’re hoping that Mazda Japan will try and accommodate our request; we’re still working on it very hard,” said Lee.

“As far as the plant expansion goes, it’s going to proceed as planned but it will be delayed by a couple of months because of the pandemic and MCO. This RM200 million capital expenditure expansion will be at the Inokom level, so it’s not at the Bermaz level. As far as cash flow is concerned, it’s not going to deplete our cash a lot,” he added.

Lee went on to say “we’re also not giving up hope on the third CKD model from Mazda Japan, which is still in the works, although it’s very hard to communicate now with Hiroshima because of this pandemic. We can’t fly there as and when we like to have further discussions, but hopefully in the next month or so, we can have some kind of conference call to push it along further.”

Once again, the specific model isn’t mentioned by Lee, but we’re inclined to believe that the CX-30 will be the one made into a CKD model, seeing how the MX-30 is relatively new and deliveries haven’t started in certain major markets just yet. Of course, this is purely our speculation and we’ll need to wait for Bermaz Auto to give the official word.

Moving on, when asked about Next Generation Vehicles (NxGVs) – as prescribed in NAP 2020 – Lee brought up the MX-30, saying, “we have plans to bring in some of these next-generation vehicles. In fact, the new MX-30 that was launched at the Tokyo Motor Show last year comes in a full electric version. Our original plan was to bring it into Malaysia end of this year, but it won’t be in the full electric version because it’s not ready; Malaysian infrastructure is not ready.”

“What we want to do is bring in the mild hybrid version. Originally, it was supposed to be end of the year but because of this pandemic, so it’s been delayed probably for a month or two, so hopefully we can bring by the first quarter of next year, the mild hybrid version. Going forward, if the infrastructure is in place and there are a lot of incentives given for next-generation vehicles, we will consider the full electric version for the MX-30,” he said.

“Other models that we’re thinking of bringing in would be the BT-50, the all-new pick-up truck to replace the aging BT-50 that was a joint venture with Ford. The new one will be a joint venture with Isuzu, but we have our own design and interior. Hopefully we can get it in the first quarter of the next calendar year,” Lee added.

So, there you have it. Bermaz Auto’s upcoming plans include the introduction of a new CKD Mazda SUV when the Inokom plant expansion is completed, along with the local debuts of the MX-30 in mild hybrid form and the third-generation BT-50 pick-up truck in Q1 2021. Which one are you looking forward to?
