2026 Volvo XC70 rolls off Taizhou production line; extended-range PHEV estimated at RM211k in China

Three months on from the initial unveiling of the 2026 Volvo XC70, the first units of the China-only plug-in hybrid model have now rolled of the production line in Taizhou, China, according to Car News China.

The first public showing of the extended-range PHEV is scheduled for later this month at the Chengdu Motor Show. The 2026 XC70 is positioned between the XC60 and the XC90, and it measures 4,815 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,650 mm tall with a 2,895 mm wheelbase.

Current information on the XC70 reveals that the plug-in hybrid SUV is based on the Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) Super Hybrid Architecture, according to Car News China, and its powertrain has been said to be the Geely group’s EM-P setup that combines a 163 PS/255 Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 218 PS/350 Nm electric motor, linked to a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.

A combined output of 381 PS and 615 Nm goes to the front wheels, while an additional rear-axle motor provides 212 PS and 290 Nm, bringing the total to 593 PS and 905 Nm.

Two battery sizes are offered for the 2026 Volvo XC70; a 21.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack enables an EV-only range of 120 km, while a 39.6 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery offers up to 245 km of EV range Meanwhile, the ICE powertrain manages a claimed fuel consumption rate of 5.85 l/100 km with the battery depleted. All figures are on the Chinese CLTC test cycle.

The exterior of the 2026 XC70 wears the Swedish brand’s signature front fascia, albeit with the Thor’s Hammer DRL signature now separate from the main headlamp units, as on the EM90 electric MPV. Along its sides, the window line that tapers upwards towards the rear takes after that of the EX90, while the rear end features one-piece vertically oriented tail lamps.

According to the publication, the plug-in hybrid model is estimated to be priced from 360,000 yuan (RM211,525) in China; the 2026 Volvo XC70 is scheduled for its public showing at the Chengdu Motor Show this month.

While the new Volvo XC70 was revealed to the world press through shadowy teaser images, over in China there is evidently not the same secrecy. Autohome released images of the SUV fully uncovered, showing the car’s design in full ahead of its Chinese-market launch in September.

As its name suggests, Volvo’s first extended-range plug-in hybrid sits in between the XC60 and XC90, and its appearance certainly bears that out, striking a good balance between its smaller sibling’s sportiness and the flagship seven-seater’s stately aesthetic.

Up front, the XC70 sports the trademark Iron Mark and diagonal bar, flanked by Thor’s Hammer signature lighting. These now function solely as the daytime running lights, as the main headlamps have been cast off into separate vertical units lower down, similar to the EM90. A large air intake sits underneath, featuring an active grille shutter.

Moving further back, you’ll find chiselled flanks and a window line that kicks up towards the rear, hallmarks of the electric EX90. The rear, meanwhile, differs from that from other newer Volvos by featuring one-piece vertical taillights, framing the Volvo script with the number plate recess sitting below the tailgate. A set of intricate 21-inch turbine-style alloy wheels completes the look.

An interior spyshot does not reveal much, but it is noteworthy that the XC70 will feature a landscape-format infotainment touchscreen rather than the usual portrait one, and there are also what appear to be dual phone holders that are typical of Chinese cars. This suggests that, like the EM90 that’s built on the bones of the Zeekr 009, the XC70 is based on another car from Geely’s stable.

Rumours hint of the car being closely related to the Lynk & Co 08, which is powered by the Chinese conglomerate’s performance-focused EM-P powertrain. This pairs a 163 PS/255 Nm 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 218 PS/350 Nm electric motor and a three-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (3DHT Evo) for a total system output of 381 PS and 615 Nm of torque. An additional 212 PS/290 Nm rear motor provides all-wheel drive and boosts output to 593 PS and a staggering 905 Nm.

Two battery sizes are offered – a 21.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack providing an electric range of 120 km and a 39.6 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit that can deliver up to 245 km (AWD 220 km) on a single charge; all figures are on China’s lenient CLTC cycle. This is certainly in line with Volvo’s promise of the XC70 being capable of over 200 km of pure electric range.

Excited? Don’t hold your breath for it to come to Malaysia – like the EM90, the XC70 is expected to be exclusive to the Chinese market.

  • Volvo XC70 returns as brand’s first extended-range PHEV model – new SMA platform, 200 km EV range

Volvo XC70 returns as brand’s first extended-range PHEV model – new SMA platform, 200 km EV range

Volvo has announced the XC70 as its first extended-range plug-in hybrid model. Designed to meet the demand for longer-range plug-in hybrids in China, the XC70 is built on the company’s Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) and is said to provide a pure electric range of up to 200 km following China’s generous CLTC standard.

The company isn’t providing much in the way of details but a range-extended plug-in hybrid (RE-PHEV) implies an electric motor powered by a battery will drive the front wheels. Meanwhile, the range extender, which is an internal combustion engine, will step in when the battery’s state of charge drops below a certain point. The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is an example of such a system.

“With its extended electric range and fast charging capabilities, the XC70 lets you handle most daily travel without tailpipe emissions and at a lower cost, while the efficient combustion engine provides freedom and flexibility for longer trips. This means you could travel longer distance without worrying about charging or refuelling. Combined with its versatility that offers space and comfort for all passengers, the XC70 is a car for every type of journey,” Volvo said in its official release.

The XC70 name isn’t new to Volvo and was previously used to rename the Cross Country version of the second-generation V70 (called the V70 XC) for harmony with the original XC90 in the early 2000s. The reborn model you see here looks to continue that legacy and is being billed as a “versatile family car, ready for all kinds of adventures.”

Appearing to be slightly larger and more spacious than the XC60, the new XC70 features design elements seen on recent Volvo models such as the EX90 and facelifted XC90. At the front, you’ll find the brand’s signature Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights set above the main headlamps with matrix LED technology.

The latter is highlighted by small light bars and is visually connected to the large blacked-out grille with active shutters. In profile, the XC70 look to have sleeker silhouette compared to the larger XC90, with a steeply raked rear window. As for the rear, there are C-shaped taillights that extend into the tailgate as well as up along the window. The ‘AWD’ badge next to the model emblem indicates an all-wheel drive configuration will be offered.

“The XC70 marks our strategic entry into the extended-range plug-in hybrid segment, a perfect bridge to full electrification. It enables us to maintain and develop a balanced product portfolio, while offering a highly attractive alternative to customers who are not yet ready for fully electric cars. This is also an example of regionalisation, where we adapt to the local market needs,” said Hakan Samuelsson, the returning president and CEO of Volvo Cars. More details about the new XC70 will be revealed in the coming months, so stay tuned.
