UMW Toyota exports Toyota Hiace to Thailand

small_toyota_hiace.jpgToyota has begun exporting it’s export version of the Toyota Hiace 2.5 litre turbodiesel van to Thailand, targetting a total sales of 1,300 units (RM143 million) by the year end, with a production of 200 units a month. UMW Toyota currently produces 200 units a month for the local market, so this would be doubling the production output for the Hiace. The van has 40% ASEAN content.

There is a high demand for the Toyota Hiace in Thailand, with 1000 units sold a month. Toyota will be exporting the 2.5 litre turbodiesel model which makes 102hp @ 3600rpm and 260Nm of torque at 1,600-2,400rpm. The 2KD-FTV turbodiesel motor is also found in the Toyota Hilux. There is also a 160hp, 241Nm 2.7 litre VVT-i petrol version available for sale locally but only the turbodiesel models are going to be exported.

UMW Toyota has invested RM9 million in the form of additional facilities to cater for the production of the export model.

Well.. I like this Hiace's design actually… the previous model really outdated already… its been produced quite a long time already… only some minor facelift… but this model's price quite high I think… N I think the petrol model isn't going to sell well here… as Hiace are more common in Businesses n they'll prefer diesel for fuel efficiency… Anyway.. Toyota's assembling here in M'sia can help in economy…

the 2.7 vvti is the same unit in the toyota fortuner. makes me wonder how whether the fortuner has a van engine, or the hiace has an SUV engine

160hp only from a 2.7 litre engine? It also goes to show how much money toyota is making from the fortuner.

Hilux in Thailand has an intercooler as well making approximately additional 20% more power for the 2.5L turbodiesel. Fortuner is an over-priced SUV. Its looks nice but not much improvement against a 1997 Prado. The engine claims to be 2.7L VVT-i but not much power and torque difference compared to the standard 2.7L in the 1997 Prado.

why is local Malaysian Hi ace is smaller than other countries- the nearest our neighbour Thailand & Spore.

They have much bigger looks Hi Ace Commuter.

Toyota Malaysia have no plan to import or locally assemble it here? instead having this smaller version??

Is there any local automotive importers importing this model?

I bet lots of travel agencies wanna buy them.

  • UMW should consider bringing the 4 speed Auto Diesel. There are a lot of auto Hiace in singapore. With the kind of traffic jam at the moment in our countries,an auto gearbox surely help to make the driver life easier.
