New Mazda BT-50 (Fighter) to debut in Australia

Mazda will be unveiling the next generation Mazda BT-50 pick-up truck at the 2010 Australian International Motor Show next October. The BT-50 is a model also known as the Mazda Fighter in certain markets. It’s essentially the Japanese counterpart to the Ford Ranger, sharing some DNA with the American-branded truck. No other information on the truck has been released so far but what we have right now is a sketch of the truck, which is shown above. An all-new Ford Ranger should follow shortly.

What type of engine will be availalble on the roadshow is worth to know. Hopefully there is improvement on diesel engines that can compete with Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton.

  • Good decision, both (Ford n Mazda) should change their design which looks horrible at the moment and make it more American size.

      perhaps not exacly.
But Mazda has a knack of turning its production cars fairly close to concept, especially taking into consideration, more practical design elements (ie. not many can afford those 24″ rubber.)

Mazda has no real need to make a truck look “truckish”. No matter how hard they try, they are not going to out-truck its Ford stablemates so why try. The last B series Mazda (and the Ford Ranger) was quite the slow seller…partly because of the notion that the compact truck is less truck that a mid/full sizer V8 powered F150, Silverado, and Ram for not a lot more money.

Mitsubishi doesn’t even try to sell its compact Triton in the land of Pickups.

Its probably going to end up closer to an Australian Ute than the F150. Who knows, Maybe Ford may even end up with a new Ranchero based on this……

Just hope that the new look could at least put Mazda BT-50 in a more attractive form, especially knowing that the new KODO design language is such a well-received look. Don’t try to make the truck looks like truck, let Ford alone do this job. Create more differentiation between BT-50 and Ranger. The success of Mitsu Triton proves the point that a truck doesn’t have to look like a truck all the time.

Garang betul the side view. But the current Fighter is too kurus (width), looks more like van. Hope this new one will come with ride/comfort better than Triton.

  • if it does look like any car.. it should be that Ssangyong pickup.. this car will prob end up being on the sketch board as the car is totally not suit to be a pickup (Small deck, crazi big wheel with low profile).. rather it is a clear urban big car with a deck..

  • Mazda BT-50 is not popular here in Malaysia (at least in KL :) ), though it won the Australia 4WD Ute of the year 2007 and 2nd place in 2009.

Maybe this new look can give the Mazda Ute a push. :D
