Lexus LFA Nürburgring Package to debut in Geneva

The Lexus LFA is highly exclusive, but this one ups the ante. Lexus will give the LFA Nürburgring Package its public debut at the upcoming Geneva show. This bespoke and more track-focused version of the supercar will only make its way to the garages of 50 buyers out of the 500 LFAs that are being built.

In a nutshell, the Nürburgring Package adds on aerodynamic features and technical revisions to improve handling and downforce. In this guise, the LFA’s 4.8-litre V10 also gets an extra 10 bhp to make 562 bhp and gear shifts by the six-speed sequential transmission is made faster. The wheels and tyres are also specific.

At Geneva, Lexus will also be presenting the CT 200h to European customers ahead of its market launch. Described as the first and only full hybrid model in the luxury hatchback segment, Europe-wide enquiries about the new car are 40% higher than expected. The same car is coming to Malaysia very soon as well, and with an attractive price of RM168,000 OTR interest should similarly encouraging. Click here to read about the CT 200h.

Lexus M’sia conducts special service campaign for IS 250

Following the global recall issued by Toyota Motor Corporation, which affects 1.7 million vehicles, Lexus Malaysia has announced a Special Service Campaign for a certain number of its IS 250 sedans.

In a statement, it said a total of 78 units of the IS 250 are involved in this SSC, and that the company is taking proactive measures to contact all the owners of the relevant vehicles.

The campaign is to address an insufficient tightening of the fuel pressure sensor which has been found on some IS 250 models produced from August 2007 to February 2009. There is a possibility that the pressure sensor could become loose, over time, and if this occurs, fuel may leak via a gasket that is used between the sensor and the delivery pipe connection.

Lexus Malaysia will inspect the vehicle for fuel leakage and if no leakage is found, the fuel pressure sensor will be tightened with the proper torque. If a fuel leak is confirmed, the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe will be replaced and the sensor will also be tightened with the proper torque.

No other Lexus or Toyota models sold by UMW Toyota Motor in Malaysia are involved in this campaign, the company said.

Toyota recalls 1.7 million cars over potential fuel leaks

Here we go again – another recall, and again from Toyota. The Japanese automaker has issued a global recall for almost 1.7 million cars, with various issues involved in the recall.

The main body of recalls are in Japan, concerning potential fuel leak problems, with the number being close to 1.3 million, making it the second largest recall issued in the country. A further 245,000 Lexus cars in the US were also recalled over similar issues. Affected US models are the 2006-2007 Lexus GS 300/350, 2006-2009 IS 250 and 2006-early 2008 IS 350 sedans.

Toyota said that the problem is caused by an improper installation of a sensor to measure fuel pressure, which may cause the device to loosen as a result of engine vibrations, possibly causing fuel to leak.

The recalled vehicles will be inspected for fuel leakage, and the sensor will be tightened if there are no leaks; if a leak is confirmed, the gasket between the sensor and the delivery pipe will be replaced, the company added.

The same problem was also found in Crown and Mark X models sold in Japan. Toyota says that there have been no reports of accidents or deaths due to this issue.

Elsewhere, recalls were also issued for 141,000 Avensis models sold in Europe and New Zealand, this time involving a fuel pipe-related issue, with irregular work possibly leading to cracks and fuel leakage. The problem was also found in 16 models sold in Japan, including the RAV4 SUV, Noah minivan and Wish MPVs.

Kylie Minogue to promote the Lexus CT 200h

Call it an endorsement, call it a partnership, in fact, call it what you will, but Aussie pop queen Kylie Minogue is the latest superstar signed on to plug a specific car model, in this case the upcoming Lexus CT 200h.

The new relationship will see Kylie supporting the introduction of the CT 200h through the cross-media Quiet Revolution marketing campaign and other forms of publicity. In addition to appearing in the upcoming TV commercial and print advertisements, Kylie will take delivery of her own personally specified CT 200h, which of course isn’t a bad thing.

It’s not the first time she’s helping to promote a car – the Ford StreetKa Roadster was, in 2002. Chances are she’ll find this one to be more comfy.

Lexus CT 200h – RM168,000 OTR, without insurance!

If you’ve been thinking of owning a new Lexus for under 200 grand, well, here’s some cheery news. The soon-to-arrive Lexus CT 200h hybrid will go for just RM168,000, on the road without insurance, according to the Lexus Malaysia website, which has put up the pricing for the hatchback. That’s for the standard CT 200h, with a Luxury version slated to pop in as well at RM196,500, also OTR without insurance.

The vehicle – in either guise – is powered by the same powertrain combination as found on the ZVW30 Prius: the 2ZR-FXE 1.8 litre Atkinson cycle petrol block – which develops 98 hp at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm at 4,000 rpm – and permanent magnet synchronous motor/168-cell NiMh electric drivetrain, which offers 80 hp and 207 Nm, together offering a combined total output of 134 hp.

Specifications-wise, common to the two CT 200h variants coming into Malaysia are perforated leather seats (with seat heaters), dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control as well as a six-speaker Lexus Premium Audio system for the basic and a 10-speaker one for the Luxury model, among other things.

There’s also the usual host of safety assist kit, these being ABS, BA, VSC, TRC and EBD, along with eight airbags and rear seat Isofix points, and the car will come wearing 16-inch wheels with 205/55 series tyres.

In what might be an effort to get the price to where it’s at, there’s a bit of fare that’s been omitted in the stock CT 200h – the headlamps are halogen units (the Luxury gets LED lamps), and the driver and passenger seat adjustment is of the manual variety (the driver’s seat on the Luxury is powered).

Elsewhere, there’s no smart entry, Electro Multi Vision (EMV) screen, rain sensing wipers or rear reverse camera on the basic CT 200h, all of which are of course to be found on the Luxury variant, and the additional RM28,500 for the latter also bags you a Lexus navigation system and remote touch controller on top of the above items.

Nonetheless, it’s an achievement, a Lexus for that price in its standard guise. More when the car is launched, undoubtedly, but one can sense some hamsters running already.

Lexus at the Tokyo Auto Salon – plenty of plastic, surgery

For performance and custom dress-up automotive parts, there’s really nothing like the annual Tokyo Auto Salon. The latest edition of the event, which ran over the weekend on January 14-16, saw five tuned and modified cars from Lexus among the host of show displays.

Leading the pack were two new interpretations of the IS F – the CCS-R (Circuit Club Sport Racer) and Club Performance Accessory. The CCS-R takes the lightweight track saloon theme quite seriously, what with its carbon fibre body panels (including front and rear spoilers, bonnet and boot lid), new frameless construction roll cage and polycarbonate windows.

Inside, there’s further extensive use of carbon fibre for the dashboard, centre console and door trims, while the racing details extend to a six-point safety harness and short-diameter steering wheel with paddle shifts. Completing the entire play are a host of reworked bits – a racing suspension, brakes, cooling and exhaust systems, plus a mechanical limited-slip differential and forged alloys shod with slick tyres.

Then there’s the car in the second photo, the IS F Club Performance Accessory, as defined by the lads at Toyota Racing Department. With this one, TRD has slapped on spoilers fore and aft, a rear diffuser and a carbon fibre hood, and again, more carbon fibre material is to be found in the cabin, along with sports seats finished in bright orange. Sports suspension and brakes, a titanium exhaust, magnesium wheels and a mechanical LSD complete the package.

The third offering on the list was the CT 200h, revealed in special F-Sport guise, with an array of sporting accessories including alloy wheels, a body kit by Modellista and Recaro sports seats bumped in.

Elsewhere, Gazoo Racing presented its racing version of the Lexus LFA supercar, which enjoyed success at last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours race, and TOM’s offered a new interpretation of the LS 460 limousine.

Lexus IS 250 updated again in Malaysia for 2011

lexus is 250 n1

Two years after the facelifted version was introduced, the Lexus IS 250 sedan has received another update for 2011, and as before, there are two variants available, the IS 250 Luxury and IS 250.

No changes to the powertrain of the rear-wheel drive vehicle, which continues to the same 2.5 litre V6 with D4 injection offering 205 hp at 6,400 rpm and 252 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm, or the 6-speed auto tranny.

As before, the exterior and interior tweaks are subtle – changes include a front grille that has been reworked to create more visual depth, while the front bumper and lower grille area now take on a bolder and more 3-dimensional feel. Additionally, each side of the lower grille area has an intake shape that is visually connected to the brake cooling ducts.

lexus is 250 n3

For the IS 250 Luxury, two different interior colours with wood trim are available, coordinated with the six exterior colours, one of which is new for 2011 – this is a unique finish known as Starlight Black, which has photoluminescent glass flakes to, as Lexus puts it, “give sparkles like a star-filled night sky.”

Unlike previously, where the HID headlamps were only specified with the IS 250 Luxury (the IS 250 came with halogens), both variants now feature HID as standard fitment, with a dark smoke coating around each headlamp giving a bolder look. New to the car is an arrowhead LED clearance lamp with Daytime Running Lights.

lexus is 250 n4

At the rear, there is stronger contrast between light and dark in the character of the bumper. The rear combination lamps now have a more unified colour tone with clear pink-smoked lenses on the indicators and reverse lamps. Also new is the tip of the dual outlet tailpipes, which is now circular and has thicker walls, as well as new 10-spoke design 17-inch alloy wheels, with staggered size rubbers (245/45 rears and 225/45 fronts).

Inside, the IS 250 now features a black metallic high-gloss coating on a number of trim panels, while the IS 250 Luxury continues to have genuine Bird’s Eye maple wood trim. Metallic ornamentation has been added to areas like the steering wheel bezel, meter rings and glove box door, and the steering wheel bezel gets a new silver surface coating, which is also to be found on the paddle shifters. Elsewhere, the speedometer and tachometer now wear new metallic rings.

lexus is 250 n2

Some revisions to the sound systems on offer – things have been scaled down somewhat; the IS 250′s standard audio system is a Lexus Premium system with a 6-CD in-dash changer and eight speakers (the 2009 facelift featured a 13-speaker system), with USB and AUX connection points.

Meanwhile, the IS 250 Luxury gets the aforementioned 13-speaker Lexus Premium Audio system. If you’re wondering where the Mark Levinson 14-speaker Premium Surround Sound system has gone, well, it’s now an option for the IS 250 Luxury, and if you opt for this, you’ll also have to install the optional Lexus Navigation package – with reverse camera and Bluetooth capability – as the 7-inch display screen is integrated.

lexus is 250 n5

Price wise, no change to the IS 250 Luxury, which continues on at RM305,000, while the IS 250′s features a slight increase, to RM 275,000, both on the road without insurance.

Lexus Malaysia launches LS 600 h L and RX 450 h hybrids

lexus 600 1

It’s highly unlikely that anyone who can spend just a shade under a million for a vehicle would really be that mindful of just how much that ride consumes, but here it is anyway, a hybrid luxury sedan that gobbles up less fuel and goes gentler on your wallet.

Okay, so maybe that’s not quite the way to look at it. How about a “doing your part for the environment while ensconced in the lap of luxury” bit then?

lexus 450 1

Well, how about both, since the Lexus LS 600 h L manages the above in equal measure, and in inimitable style at that. The flagship hybrid luxury sedan is Lexus Malaysia’s latest introduction into the market, and making it a double do for the higher-end hybrid movement is the introduction of the RX 450 h SUV as well. Which of course earns Toyota the bragging rights as the first player to have three hybrids in the country, two of them luxury units.

Lexus RX 270 introduced in Malaysia – 185hp four-cylinder

lexus rx 270 1

Success begets success, it is said, and Lexus Malaysia will certainly be looking at that adage ringing true. Given that achieved by the RX 350 since its arrival here, the company is quietly hoping that a logical extension of the form – in this case a smaller engined, front-wheel drive variant with most of the trimmings kept on – will do equally well.

So it is with that premise that the RX 270 makes its debut here, with the vehicle being launched earlier this evening, as a slightly cheaper alternative to those who love what the Japanese luxury SUV is all about but think the bigger block and all-wheel drive is surplus to needs.

lexus rx 270 2

Lexus Malaysia says that this is the first time that the RX 270 is being officially offered in Asian markets and it’s also the first time that a front-wheel drive variant is officially available in Asia (front-wheel drive variants of the RX350 have been offered in North America with previous generations).

At the heart of the new variant sits a 2.7 litre 1AR-FE four pot, with Dual VVT-i and an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS), which alters the length of the intake pipe to improve torque delivery. Power figures for the unit are 185hp at 5,800rpm and a torque output of 252Nm at 4,200rpm (the 2GR-FE 3.5 litre V6 unit in the RX 350 turns out 273hp at 6,300rpm and 346Nm at 4,700rpm in comparison).

lexus rx 270 3

Features of the 1AR-FE include twin balancer shafts, resin gears, a rigid intake manifold and chain cover, multi-resonators in the intake system with a two-stage intake pass, all of which help to reduce noise and vibration. To keep internal friction low, the engine has roller rocker arms, less piston ring tension, lighter parts and a three-stage variable output oil pump. It’s tuned to run on RON 91 rated gas, so there should be nary an issue with RON 95.

If you’re thinking that less means less, well, that’s really not the case here with the RX 270. It comes with the same six-speed Super ECT with A.I. Shift auto tranny as found on the RX 350, as well as the four-wheel independent suspension with a compact trailing-arm double wishbone rear suspension and similar tyre and wheel sizes of the latter – 235/60 series rubbers sitting on 18-inch alloys.

lexus rx 270 5

Indeed, most of what’s to be found on the RX 350 is strapped on here, with the only differences – aside from the drive configuration and engine – being that the RX 270 doesn’t get the RX 350′s tilt/slide moonroof, the woodgrain mix in the interior panelling (it’s all leather here) and the adaptive front lighting system for the bi-xenon headlamps. Otherwise, it’s all par for the course – 10 airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system and smart entry and start system, among others.

New to the car is an optional navigation system package, with an eight-inch LCD Electro Multi Vision (EMV) display. The package isn’t just about the nav and the screen – it also includes a remote touch controller, reverse camera, Bluetooth connectivity and a 12-speaker premium audio system. Lexus Malaysia is introducing the package to the rest of its model line-up (GS 300, LS 460 L and RX 350) in conjunction with its introduction here on the RX 270.

lexus rx 270 4

The RX 270 is available in six colour choices and two interior colour themes, both with Abyss Black painted panel finishing. It’s priced at RM340,000 on-the-road, without insurance, which makes it RM37,000 less than the RX 350. The optional navigation package goes for RM17,000.

Lexus gives its CT 200h hybrid the F Sport treatment

lexus ct 200 h f sport a

Lexus has given its CT 200h hybrid a bit of a bells and whistles upgrade with the introduction of the F Sport version of the vehicle. The model, which made its global debut at the Australian International Motor Show, gets a number of visual and performance enhancements in keeping with the F Sport flavour.

Exterior enhancements include front and rear styling cues as well as alloy wheels and badging, and the car is available in Lexus’ unique Flame Blue exterior shade.

lexus ct 200 h f sport b

Inside, this particular CT 200h features an optional unique interior trim, a F Sport steering wheel, sports pedals, scuff plates, instrument panel and privacy glass.

Mechanically, there are no changes to the powertrain over the standard CT 200h – the F Sport utilises the same 1.8 litre VVT-i four-cylinder petrol block and rear-mounted electric-drive motor/generator system, with an electronically-controlled CVT driving the front wheels.

lexus ct 200 h f sport c

The F Sport does however get Lexus’ unique body performance damper, designed to improve ride and handling. These contribute to increased torsional rigidity and the suppression of vibrations while contributing to added ride comfort, without any added weight penalty.

The lateral dampers, used in both front and rear, are elements in a system of additional performance measures that also includes strategic strengthening and carefully-gauged welding throughout the vehicle.
