The GTI Project: race around a Scalextric track!

GTI Project

Volkswagen and their agency Tribal DDB have launched a new website called The GTI Project where after viewing an intro sequence explaining some of the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk6’s features, you get to trash it around a track virtually.

The intro sequence features a view around a miniature Scalextric track with a 1:43 scale Mk6 GTI mounted on a rail – is that meant to say the new Mk6 corners like it’s on rails? Oh, and I must mention that there’s really no steering involved in the race, purely acceleration and braking because you’re actually racing on the same miniature race track. Despite the rails you can still crash if you corner too fast.

Updated Volkswagen Passat Lingyu B5

Volkswagen Passat Lingyu

The B5 Passat soldiers on in long wheelbase form in China with this latest version called the Volkswagen Passat Lingyu, while the newer B6 model sold here in Malaysia as the Passat is called the Magotan there.

Volkswagen Passat Lingyu

The B5 Passat gets its wheelbase extended by 91mm to suit Chinese chauffeur-driven application (even the A4 gets extended there) and is powered by a 163 horsepower 1.8 liter turbo, up from 150 horses in the pre-update version. There are also 2.0 liter and 2.8 liter normally aspirated V6 engines.

FYI, if I am not mistaken it is this B5 Passat platform that Proton intended to use as the base for the new Perdana should the Volkswagen-Proton deal had gone through.

B&B tuned Volkswagen Eos has 650Nm of torque!

B&B Volkwagen Eos

The Volkswagen EOS you see above may only have a subtle looking bodykit but if you tick the right checkboxes on the B&B tuning options list it could be a monster putting out 500 horsepower and 650Nm of torque!

Not quite enough to rival the Golf GTI W12 650 Concept but still a hell lot of power for a front wheel drive convertible. The fact that it is a convertible without a roof also means a less rigid chassis. 0 to 100km/h can be hit in 4.2 seconds, and 200km/h in 13.5 seconds, up to a top speed of 308km/h.

There are various levels of tune for the engine ranging from the base 360 horses option, up to 400, 450 and finally the 500 horsepower option. The 500hp tuning kit includes a new intercooled turbocharger, a new cylinder head with lowered compression, special suction and airflow pipes, high-powered injection elements and an upgraded fuel pump that is more precise in its fuel delivery. The engine has been strengthened with uprated ledges, gaskets and etc. A special slim line oilcooler stabilizes the oil temp, and finally there is a racing exhaust system.

Of course to achieve all of this to begin with you need a Volkswagen Eos. Volkswagen Malaysia sells one for RM250k OTR without insurance. CIMB’s currently on-going Dream Deposit Drive competition offers 4 Volkswagens to anyone who deposits their cash into a CIMB deposit account. Each RM500 gets you one entry. April’s car is the Golf GTI and the Eos will be May’s car, so bank in your cash in May!

Much better than the lottery as you don’t lose your cash if you don’t win.

Volkswagen Golf GTD Mk6: 170PS oil burner

Volkswagen Golf GTD

The Mk5 Golf had a 170 PS hot diesel version powered by a 2.0 liter TDI diesel engine and it shared the twincharged 1.4 TSI petrol version’s Golf GT nameplate.

With the Mk6, Volkswagen brings back the GTD nameplate first used in 1982 for the fast oil burning counterpart to the Golf GTI, this time also with 170 PS and 350Nm of torque this time from as low as 1,750rpm – the Mk5 GT diesel started from 1,900rpm.

Volkswagen Golf GTD

When driven sedately, it sips only 5.6 liters of fuel per 100km when equipped with the 6-speed DSG twin clutch transmission (a 6-speed manual is also available), but if you really hammer the accelerator it hits 100km/h in 8.1 seconds, and a top speed of 222km/h (220 in the DSG).

Now while most diesel engines have more than enough horses and torque to justify being used in a sporty variant, the kind of sounds they put out doesn’t really compel you to wind down the windows when you storm through the Smart tunnel, etc.

Volkswagen actually uses a sound generator to modify the sound of the engine that is heard in the interior, especially at the low ends of the RPM range. Interesting.

Look at a whole photo gallery after the jump.

Volkswagen kills Rabbit nameplate for the US

Volkswagen Golf

The Rabbit will be known as the Golf when the Mk6 edition hits American shores in October this year. The US-market Volkswagen Golf will also feature the 2.0 liter inline-4 turbodiesel that Volkswagen has started selling in the Jetta in that market.

The move to the Golf name for that market is part of a new directive to use the same name in every market for a vehicle, however Volkswagen says it won’t make it any easier or save much cost in advertising and brand building because according to spokesperson Tom Wegehaupt, Volkswagen generally uses market-specific rather than global campaigns (see some nice examples linked below).

Americans love large engines so the baseline model will once again get a 170 horsepower 2.5 liter normally aspirated inline-5 engine.

And then there is of course the GTI.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk6 – full details unveiled!

Golf GTI

Volkswagen has unveiled the production version of the Mk6 Volkswagen Golf GTI and some journalists have already managed to have a go at it at the international driving presentation in Saint-Tropez, France. This blog has no such luck so we’ll just have a look at the details while we wait for the Mk6 to reach our shores and then perhaps we can have a go, like we did with the Mk5 Golf GTI. For now you’ll have to wait for write-ups in the local magazines, and read my write-up after the jump.

Volkswagen Polo Plus and Polo Sedan for the US

Polo Classic Sedan
Click for enlarged image

Volkswagen will create two new cars for the US market. One is a larger and taller of the new Volkswagen Polo, somewhat like what the Golf Plus is to the Golf, in fact it could be appropriate to refer to it as the Volkswagen Polo Plus for now.

The other is a compact sedan version of the Volkswagen Polo, such as the previous generation Polo’s Polo Classic Sedan. Both versions will sit on an extended wheelbase version of the Polo’s platform. The two cars will likely be built at Volkswagen’s Mexico factory in order to hit the Polo Plus target price of between US$13,000 to US$15,000 in order to distance it from the Jetta and the upcoming NMS.

Volkswagen may present the Golf GTI-R at the Frankfurt Motor Show

With the Volkswagen Golf Mk V, the auto maker released the range-topping, high performance R32 variant, but for the Golf Mk VI, Volkswagen will release the GTI-R, and now, rumor has it that the auto maker will present the powerful hot hatch at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

At the moment, we do know that Volkswagen has dropped the normally aspirated 3.2 liter V6, in favor for a turbocharged 2.0 liter 4-cylinder power plant which drives all four wheels and it is expected to output about 266HP. This same engine which releases fewer harmful emissions might also be used in a high performance Volkswagen Scirocco. The power plant should also be mated to either a 6 speed manual, or a DSG dual-clutch transmission.

Other features, which are expected to be offered with the GTI-R include, among others, newly designed front and rear bumpers, LED daytime running lights, side skirts, larger wheels, rear-roof spoiler, LED tail lights as well as wider wheel arches.

New generation Volkswagen Polo Classic Sedan

Polo Classic Sedan

The first generation Volkswagen Polo had a sedan variant called the Derby and this tradition has continued even until the version before the recently unveiled new model, where the sedan version was called the Volkswagen Polo Classic. The Polo Classic is sold in countries like Brazil, South Africa, China and even Australia. Thus it would only make sense for the Polo Classic sedan to be updated following the release of the new Polo hatchback. Anyway the point of this post is the image above, Theophilus Chin’s artist’s impression of what a new Polo Classic sedan could look like. Not hard to make it look decent since the base car was already such a looker!
