Toyota to develop new small SUV for Europe

Toyota Urban Cruiser

Toyota is developing a small SUV to contend in the increasing small SUV segment in the European market, currently dominated by the Suzuki Jimny and the Suzuki SX4 (according to 2006 sales results), with Toyota-owned Daihatsu coming in third place with the Daihatsu Terios.

Instead of coming in with the Daihatsu-based Toyota Rush which would be pointless in a mature market that already has the Terios, Toyota is developing a new small SUV that will be based on second generation Toyota Ist/Scion xD underpinings (which also form the base of the Yaris), with styling largely drawn from the Toyota Urban Cruiser concept back unveiled last year.

Looking at the choice of platform and its competitors, it would most likely be an urban “cross” SUV rather than one that can do any offroading.

I wont be surprised though. Most people’s “off road” perception is a gravel road. There is certainly a market for small car based “SUVs” (as pointless as it sounds).

And who do we have to thank for? Subaru…..and its outback range for starting the car based SUV conversion.

However looking at this concept, SUV is a misnomer. Its an “urban cruiser”…whatever that means, and never intended to venture off tarmac roads (I mean look at the tyres).

The high ground clearence and possible 4WD is just to climb curbs……to get to that elusive parking spot….

This design aren’t going to win them(Euro consumer) back!
Better go back to your CONSERVATIVE PHILOSOPHY!

The yaris underpinnings is also the underpinnings of Perodua Myvi.

In a way you can say that this is actually a myvi on steroids!!
