Naza secures Peugeot distributorship for 2008

peugeot logoWe should have seen this coming: Naza has picked up the sole distributorship for Peugeot cars here in Malaysia after Cycle and Carriage Bintang Berhad announced back in October that it had decided not to renew its contract, which would expire at the end of this year.

The Naza Group already has a relationship with Automobiles Peugeot through Naza Corporation Sdn Bhd to assemble the Peugeot 206 here locally as the Naza 206 Bestari.

Expect the sexy looking Peugeot 407 to be assembled locally soon, which should put it in better reach for buyers looking at D-segment sedans and want to try something European. The 2.0 litre model currently sells for RM164,989.90 OTR with insurance. A drop to about RM130k to RM140k through local assembly is likely, and this is good news to me at least, because Naza has some surprisingly very decent local assembly build quality for its foreign brand cars, something I’ve personally observed with the new Kia Optima and the Naza Bestari.

    Sweet.
They should bring in the 207, 308 as well as the 4007 SUV.
    And prob the 107 too.

    Prices (hopefully);

    The Peugeot 107 1.0 5-dr at RM50k
    The Peugeot 207 1.6 120 5-dr at RM88k
    The Peugeot 308 2.0 5-dr at RM115k
    The Peugeot 407 2.0 4-dr at RM135k
    The Peugeot 407 2.2 4-dr at RM155k
    The Peugeot 407 3.0 V6 4-dr at RM210k
    The Peugeot 4007 2.4 SUV at RM150k
    The Peugeot 607 3.0 V6 4-dr at RM290k
    The Peugeot 807 2.0 MPV at RM180k

These are just my suggestions, but hopefully pricing will be something like this.

I think Naza maybe in talk to assemble the VW also. Maybe Kak Fidah already told Proton not to proceed talks with VW and ask VW to talk to Nasim instead. Conspiracy theory?

Better not post conspiracies about ministers or they will track you down and sue you for defamation! Anyway I hope to see Peugeot 308 with the 1.6-litre TURBO engine! Good warranty, spare parts pricing and service backup, toll-free call centre, etc.

I think Naza should have done this a long time ago but hey, better late than never. This should give a lot of advantage to Naza especially being able to, somehow, in any way, experience have the transfer of information on the brand.

cycle and carriage probably dropped the brand cause of poor sales.

even the naza bestari aint selling well at all. I dont foresee naza selling any more Peugeot cars than C&C.

    would you buy one?

i would buy it, only if the price is right. if got , say 130k for 407, it’s good price for european car. much better than that camry and accord. if the price is right, yeah why not? only downside is maintenance cost, but i think if the car sale is good, naza would bring/made more, cheaper part, wouldn’t they?

Ya, Naza should bring in the latest series with the latest technology, not the dated ones. Bring in 308 1.6 turbo 150PS, put in the full specs with the latest tech and gadgets like 6 airbags, sunroof, sat nav, bluetooth, 18″ wheels etc and price it RM 110k, I’ll be the first to get it!

even at a cheaper price, the 407 will still not make a dent in the sales of camry and accord despite its fantastic ride, and french flair. thats a sad fact in our market.

another good example is the ford focus. on paper, and also in the eyes of the european consumer and motoring press, a very good car with lots of quality. but it still got its ‘rear’ kicked in very badly by the honda civic despite being slightly cheaper. how many focuses do you think ford sold? not very many…

I hope the after sales service will improve. My 307SW was a fantastic car but had gearbox problems after 3 years. sold it just in time. my friend has a 807 which is also 3 years old and he finally had to change the gearbox for RM 22k which they told him was a discounted price since he had already spent 8K in repairs. But in terms of comfort, the seats are unbeatable.

There is just no ‘wow’ factor in any European marques in Malaysia. Many of us are just waiting to be ‘delighted’ by a European. Having driven 3 Protons, a pseudo-Jap btw, and now driving a Jap, I really look forward to drving a European. Naza should become a market ‘eye-opener’ with Peugeot latest models, loded with the latest engine/safety/ICE technology, super warranty (say 5 years 100kkm), free service (say 3 years), and price them at least 5% below the segment leader.

Don’t you think the prices are *way* too low for a CBU model? It’s NON-ASEAN imports, which have higher taxes, etc than Japanese and Koreans. Even now, the Pugs are considered cheaper priced if we compared to Japanese makes charging at such high price,… and not to mentioned sold by their *OWN* company and have more volume of imports, etc. Not EVEN to mentioned reduced specs and some parts using locals.

From a consumer viewpoint, the current Naza Bestari is a continental (which suppose to cost more) but for the manual version after discount, you can get it less than 60K! That’s………….. Any japanese car for 60K-70K? Sincerely, talk to anyone who didn’t know about the Naza 206, they’l conclude or guess it’s a COPY, NOT ORIGINAL, etc, because it’s unbelievable that a continental are actually much more CHEAPER than the japanese and koreans.

Anyway or anyhow, if it were to priced cheap, it’s good news for those who appreciates it, but the fact in our country is, most people only know and go for Japanese.
    Locals -> Japanese -> Koreans -> Continentals.

Even if it’s priced cheap, people would believe the parts will not be cheap and hence, there’s very small chance that they will even consider to even test it not to mention buying it. Another problem is, even if they wants to buy it after testing it, comments, crtitism, etc will all thrown to them by their friends, relatives, etc which most probably would change their views.
Without much volume, the prices of the parts is very hard to be adjusted/reduced, and also leads to less profesional people to handle/fix the car.

Talk about profesional people handling/fixing the car, that’s also another problem. The 206 has already been around for years, and the Bestari is also around for almost 2 years. But you can hardly find a profesional to handle the car. The SC people seems to have trouble to EVEN check the car, as if the problem is new to them and also despite having MULTIPLEXING technology, shouldn’t it be easier and faster to track a common fault/problem? They can take days just to CHECK a single problem, now that’s unprofesional and makes people lose confidence. For Naza SC, after so long, I’m surprised that the one in Klang only have 1 MISERABLE mechanic able to handle Bestari….

I feel we’re still likes their white mouse for them to do trial and error… That can never do… so what if they offer 5 years warranty when everytime you have some minor or very common problem (e.g. AL4 gearbox common fault which happens to many Pug owners for YEARS) to check, they seems to have NO idea and need at least 3 days to check. So does it mean driving a Pug means you must be rich and have extra cars, so you can leave your car there for them to mess around? Or perhaps take it for Joy Ride, maybe showing off, etc????? The delay they took really makes people wonder what they’re doing with the car actually.

Anyway, the point is, with all these problems, it’s NOT only the matter of the price of the car anymore. It wasn’t anyway. The current 407 is already priced competitive enough with Camry and Accord, not to mentioned it’s a continental/non-asean imports.

    Paul,

Previously, around August, I was told by a Naza salesman about them testing a japanese gearbox which they hope to replace the AL4 Porshe Tiptronic gearbox (due to the increase price by Peugeot France and also exchange rates). I cannot recall that time he mentioned they were testing with a Bestari or 407 CKD version, but I was told their next plan was the 407 because I asked if it were the 307. I was also told the AL4 gearbox currently cost >14K alone (before increase by France), so if it’s true, the Bestari is really cheap in this case, I mean really cheap if we were to compare it with current car’s price in Malaysia. Because of the gearbox price and reliability issue, they’re opting for japanese gearbox, which they say is much more cheaper and reliable. So, if it was true and successful, future CKD owners will not have the luxury to enjoy the features of the AL4 gearbox and also the Tiptronic, but on the other hand, they might have more realibility, expertise on the gearbox as well as, cheaper replacement and also car price. Perhaps they should offer both as a choice, but very unlikely due to lack of expertise and it seems they don’t like to offer choices as an option.
Anyway, can you verify the information with the right people on the japanese gearbox as well as the 407 CKD?

By the way, I was also told during that time that Naza is taking over and the import of Peugeot was handled by Naza. If I remember correctly and not wrong, I was told Naza have their own ports or something which they import the Pugs in and there’s a batch of 407 stuck in the port unable to release due to someone wanting to increase the price of the car or something to above 200K due to the car was under priced and under rated or something. Maybe you can verify it as well.

Thank paultan, just trying to clarify and find out more. But if they really change it to a japanese box, it’ll be a let down for those Pug enthusiast. The previous 206 before 2003 (I think), has not been using the Tiptronic gearbox. Tough, I’m not sure of the reliability, but if the Tiptronic gearbox was not reliable, why would Peugeot still use it?

    Anyway, thanks again.

    ———————————

    heathercole,

What do you mean by trim level of Peugeot drop? The 206 CKD most common problem I believe is due to poor assembly, but it’s still not as bad as another country’s CKD which you can found on the net, they have worst rattling sound problem, etc caused by poor aseembly/workmanship/locally made parts, etc.

As regard to safety measure, the 206 minimum airbag is 2, up to a choice of 6. Naza did not changed anything, in fact, tthe 206 is nothing but a rebadge version, it’s still a Peugeot 206, with the badge changed. If you take off the Naza logo in the Steering, you can see the original Lion logo “frame”, which means, they just remove the Lion logo and changed to Naza logo.

But it’s really annoying that they HAVE TO rebadge it, just makes everything looks ugly, giving it a bad name and reputation and many misunderstandings. And also the effort and money to rebadge it back and possibly facing problems from rebadging back to Peugeot logo.

Lastly, the main problem or concern is the maintenance service, they seems to have really lack of mechanic/expertise… The main service centre in Klang only have 1 (after so long) miserable mechanic able to handle the 206, and they need long long time just to check a problem (not to mention FIX, which could takes days…). Anyway, this is the worst let down and problem which can cause people to stay away… Imagine you have a some minor issue, and they need you to leave the car there for1-2 days???
