BMW files a series of interesting trademark registrations – is an M diesel on the way?

BMW TwinPower Turbo

A bunch of trademark registration filings by BMW has given us a glimpse of what could be coming up in the future. Here’s a full list:

The names with i probably versions of a new range of ‘isetta’ project i compact cars to compete in the premium city car category. The names with E could be either electric versions of the Project i cars or perhaps electric versions of existing models with “eDrive” (as opposed to sDrive or xDrive) powertrains. An E1 could be a 1-Series powered by eDrive, for example. This is all just speculative of course. Compactive is probably a portmanteau of Compact and Active, but it doesn’t sound very nice.

M 50 d sounds very interesting – are we looking at the BMW M division’s first turbodiesel car? They’ve already gone ahead and broken many other M ‘taboos’ already, and I did actually hear a source admit there’s a M diesel in the making sometime last year.

  • OMG!! So many new engines. I think this is the right way; build better engine for the future, not to wasting time, money and effort to run a F1 and only to get a big head and glamourous chicks.

M50d is confirmed (not so sure about that) by a BMW forumer that it will be the tri-turbo diesel. It will be available from 5 series model onwards and most probably will debut in the next 6 series.
