Lotus-Renault GP unveil livery, aims for victories in 2011

Lotus-Renault GP has unveiled the finalised livery for its 2011 car at the Autosport International Show in UK. While the revived iconic black and gold colour scheme (with some splashes of red to accommodate oil supplier Total) is final, it was shown on last season’s R30 – the R31 will be launched in Valencia on January 31, a day before official pre-season testing kicks off.

As all of us know, Group Lotus, which is fully owned by national carmaker Proton, has bought into the Renault team and is now a title sponsor of the Enstone outfit, much like what Vodafone and Petronas is to McLaren and Mercedes respectively. This is the start, and the sportscar maker plans to inch its way into having full control of the team eventually. It’s all part of the Dany Bahar led masterplan to take on the likes of Ferrari and Porsche, as demonstrated in Paris last year.

The livery was unwrapped by team driver Vitaly Petrov and Formula 1 legend Jean Alesi, present as brand ambassador for Lotus. “Everyone remembers the black and gold Lotuses from years ago and it’s nice they have been brought back. When you look around the show here and see those cars, then see this car, it does make you smile,” the Frenchman said.

Along with the new look is new ambition. “We want to win with this car. To win you need to be a regular podium finisher – and then you will win – and that is our target. My ambition has always been to establish this team as a top team. I want us to be recognised as a top team like Ferrari or McLaren,” team boss Eric Boullier told Autosport.

On his team’s new name, Boullier said: “To have Clive Chapman here is a good sign, I must say. Definitely we are representing Lotus Cars – and we don’t claim any heritage or anything. We are the F1 vision of Lotus. It is good to have a Chapman family member here. The strategy of Group Lotus was to licence the F1 entry. For reasons that they decided on their own, they decided to change their strategy and to stick with us. That is it. There is only one Lotus manufacturer in the world and they have asked us to represent them in F1. That is the end of the story.”

By the way, should the team win a race, the British anthem will be played, not the French anthem, as Renault will compete next season with a British racing license, now that they have Lotus onboard. By the way, Tony Fernandes’ Team Lotus (as it will be called from now) is using a Malaysian license, so Negaraku will be played should the team win a race, although that’s a highly unlikely scenario in the near future.

Morally Proton has the right to use the Lotus name since they own Group Lotus. But then again, the people who ran Lotus into the ground in 1994 sold the name to David Hunt, who then sold it to Tony. Weird situation. All the best.

so David Hunt has conned Tony Fernades into buying just a ‘name’?? without anything ‘solid’?? poor Tony.. it’s like i buy a ‘Team KFC’ name rights from someone & use it in karting competition, i don’t own KFC or sell KFC’s chicken.. but i can use the name to my own team ‘advantages’.. it’s fine i guess, until KFC itself come out & decide to race on KFC name by themself.. what leave me? give free KFC publicity but can’t gain any branding profit from it anymore coz everyone now know the ‘real’ KFC team is?? poor me.. :)

True.. but now it’s just a ‘racing team’ name in the past… in the beginning it make sense coz Group Lotus & Team Lotus was owned by the same owner i.e Colin Chapman.. now, it make no sense at all if someone with no link to Group Lotus to use the “Lotus” name to go racing with.. for what? advertisement for free? it make matter worse when the ‘other’ Lotus which sell the “Lotus” roadcar decide to race too…

osh_kosh you need to consider that Chapman died in 1982 and the Chapman link disappeared with it. Since then Team Lotus & Group Lotus were bought and sold independently. Not to mention operated separately since the 50s. Team Lotus continued to race in F1 with no common ownership for many years, right up til 1994.

To put it another way, when Senna was racing for Team Lotus in the 80s he was racing for an independent race team with no link whatsoever to the sports car company other than by name ‘Lotus’ He raced for Team Lotus not Group Lotus.

Group Lotus were in fact paying sponsors to Team Lotus capitalizing on the marketing platform like any other sponsor would. Thus the set up of Team Lotus today really is no different to how it was then.

Say what you want to say osh_kosh. Come 2011 season, Lotus-Renault will only be known as Renault on the score board while Tony’s Lotus will be known as Lotus.

The fact is Lotus Group is just sponsoring team Renault, at this moment.

            @racefan,
yes… i knew that both was managed separately, since the beginning, in fact that was what i said earlier, it started with the same owner, right? What Colin done was right, he didn’t want his F1 team to interfear with his roadcars manufacturing business & vise versa. Also no one can stop him from using his F1 platform as marketing or branding awareness for his roadcars company, he can & has done it. IMO that’s what he intend to do in the 1st place. So, all this make sense in business point of view. But what happen next was very unfortunate, no one can predict the future & please don’t tell me that Colin planned to sold Team Lotus since the very existence of it. Btw, funny coz u said that Group Lotus link ended when Colin died yet at the end u said that Group Lotus maintained the title sponsor for Team Lotus? And how is this the same with TF’s team? He didn’t have link to Group Lotus & didn’t even have a paying sponsor name LOTUS!

            @frossonice,

yes, i’ve said what i want & so do u (let celebrate??).. btw, i knew that Group Lotus is title sponsor, hence will be call Renault & TF’s Team will be known as Lotus but your point is???? hmmmm…

@osh kosh, Apologies for not spelling it down to a T. Thus confusing you. I meant ‘link’ via ownership. There is no link. Group Lotus were paying sponsors to Team Lotus. If you can call this a link then it is no different to the ‘link’ between Marlboro and Scuderia Ferrari. I can further clarify semantics if it is still to vague for you to understand

i agree with ‘thepil0t’, Group Lotus can’t stop TF from using the Lotus name because he has bought the name rights i.e Team Lotus. But i also agree with ‘osh_kosh’, why Tony want to give free advertisement to Lotus? Come on, if anyone ask u what’s Lotus brand is? Like it or not, you will actually point out to Lotus roadcars & F1 in the old days (or perhaps Proton?), you will probably mention about AirAsia or Naza after that if the guys asking look interested (or perhaps some of non f1 fans didn’t even know the link). So it benefit Lotus car manufacturer the most. Fine, if you have sponsorship agreement with them & get the payment. But if not, why you want to give them advantages if Group Lotus didn’t even want anything related to you? Everyone know about this & i can’t use the name advantages to attract sponsors anymore so better give my team my own name, right? It’s funny, something like if you bought a car & get the car dealer’s name & tel. number print out on the number plate, why give them free advertisement where as u benefit nothing?

For the same reasons Team Lotus continued to race in F1 after Chapman died. Because they were an F1 race team like other independent race teams Williams and McLaren. Team Lotus raced with no link to the automotive outfit, Group Lotus.

In other words, Team Lotus did not need a reason from Group Lotus to race in F1. Team Lotus raced in F1 because they were already F1 brand, (like Williams, McLaren etc) while Group Lotus was a an automotive brand in the automotive sector.

However until DRB(Proton) took over Group Lotus, Team Lotus and Group Lotus existed and operated within their own respective sectors and with mutual respect for each other.

proton isn’t fighting with tony to use the lotus name. they own the lotus car company 100%. they have every right.

and likewise, tony has all the right to use “team lotus” as he bought the name, but for what purpose now, only time will tell.

NO increase sales for lotus cars and full of a lots tension costs for join every series of racing that available in the world…In the end, Proton will realized they been conned by Dany bahar for losing too much $…then worst case, Lotus will bankrupt and follow their ex-owner BUGATI sold to German marque, VW. or may be will follow AGUSTA superbike sold by Proton to BMW AG.

As a Conclusion, majority British brands end up fall into German. German win the automotive war.

Yes, he certainly can claim the right. He OWNS it. When did the old Team Lotus sold road cars? They never did! thus your argument does not hold water.

Vice versa, Group Lotus never produced race cars and raced in F1 and never claimed any of Team Lotus’ race heritage in the past until now, suddenly.

However, of course Group Lotus as a car company has every right to promote themselves in F1 or anywhere else, by sponsoring a team or running their own team but they have no right to infringe on the rights of Team Lotus or ‘pass off’ as them which they are clearly doing now.

In other words, they can run their own ‘Lotus’ team but they must not call it Team Lotus, or use any branding,(font style, colour etc) that was associated with Team Lotus. They can call their team ‘Lotus Cars’ , Lotus F1 racing’, Lotus Racing’ ‘Lotus GP’ or whatever but right now their clearly attempting to pass off as Team Lotus with the black/gold livery and mention of past race heritage etc. They are doing it ‘cleverly’ to some degree but not calling themselves outright Team lotus but still claiming the heritage.

It’s cunning and misleading. If they say they are not Team Lotus and that Team Lotus is dead and should be left dead, as they have declared in press releases.. they should stick to it and enter F1 with a completely FRESH Lotus branding campaign. I will support that. Otherwise they’re not being honest and using PR to confuse ppl. For this I am not impressed with Group Lotus.

I don’t agree, heritage can’t be owned, expecially if u only buy the name not the people running it or have link to previous team. Both can’t claimed the previous glory & achievement. Team Lotus is DEAD. Just let them R.I.P.

I guess the only link would be David Hunt who sold Team Lotus to Tony. He bought the team from Peter Collins to try and keep it afloat. Hunt raced the team in the last two races in 1994 under his ownership and then licensed the brand to Pacific Grand Prix Team in 1995 when there were no resources to race the Team Lotus team themselves.

If there was any need for a reference to a link, that would be it.

yes he got so much ‘support’ from the govt that they placed obstacles for all his projects.

The fact is the govt supports him when what he does benefits the govt. For instance when he started Tune Air (Air Asia). the govt was happy to support because he took control of what otherwise was an embarrasment to the country. Something like 40m in debt liability. He turned it around into a profitable business and when AA started to turn into a threat to state owned companies like MAS, the govt started to challenge him. It’s just business. Unfortunate for the govt that Tony is very result oriented and always outrun those sorry govt entities.

It’s the same with his F1 project.

Do some research instead of blindly making conjectures. You can’t expect me to do all your thinking but I’ll drop some hints and you can connect the dots. By doing the research you learn a whole lot more. I do hope you stick to the matter I mentioned which is you claiming that LITESPEED is behind the team.

Here are some facts and some thinking for you:
            1. Litespeed is an F3 team. How many personnel do you think is in a F3 team? Litespeed is not even near as large as Carlin. They’re one of the smaller F3 teams. Tony’s team is over 200+ in manpower size. How do you credit Litespeed for that?

            2. Do you know who is behind Litespeed. Here are some clues – N.J., S.K. are some names. Are they involved in Tony’s team? Did Mike Gascoyne come from LiteSpeed? How about team manager Graham Watson? chief designer Lewis Butler? Jarno’s engineer Gianluca Pisanello? Heikki’s engineer Juan Ramirez? These are all names you can dig from the net including in paultan itself. WHO and HOW many in the current 220+ strong team is from Litespeed? Anyone in the pit crew team from Litespeed. Mike Gascoyne has pointed out on many occasions that the team recruited current F1 staff or staff with recent F1 experience. Not from junior race teams like Litespeed.

The 3 or 4 people Tony mentioned several times in media that were there in the beginning were NOT Litespeed personnel. M.G, S.S, were two of them.

It’s easy to ‘guess’ but it takes balls to dig!

Whatever la…. regardless of how many ‘Malaysian’ teams in F1, I swear that I won’t watch any F1 races for this year. I HATE MALAYSIAN SPONSORED TEAM. Too much politics!!! Since when Malaysia is so damn rich that we are so eager for worldwide publicity?

Seriously Malaysian should stop wasting time indulging in F1 circus.

‘a title sponsor of the Enstone outfit, much like what Vodafone and Petronas is to McLaren and Mercedes respectively’

wats the reason for dis?? publicity the ‘LOTUS’ name?? then y they ask Tony to stop using LOTUS as the name of the team?? if u have three teams using the team LOTUS, tats even get more ppl attention..
wat a joke PROTON involve in F1.

    • you just dont get it ,dont you.
      – lotus is the name of glory and ownership right – not about promting lotus.

this issue will bring more excitement to the f1. and it draws lots of attention and good for businesses.

Agreed. This is Bullshit. Waste rakyat money to involve in a elite sport. Use the money that can be saved to help Kelantan and Kedah from flooding lar…. Already so many year floosing still cannot solve….. Pump more money into P1 to develop even better cars for the rakyat is also a good move, instead of participating in a sport where mannufacturers are trying to get out of.

I hate to say this but still i have to say this. Tony, just give up. You better go back and concentrate on your air asia business.

This is my 1st time supporting Proton. They better make me proud and I know they will! Lets bring back arton senna’s past glory back.

  • Proton and Group Lotus are just sponsors in F1. Genii Capital owns 100% of the Lotus Renault GP team.

As long as Proton and Group Lotus pay 20 million US dollars to Genii every year, Genii uses the Lotus name in the team’s name, put a Lotus sticker on their cars, and they let Proton and Group Lotus choose the color of the cars. If Proton stops paying the sponsorship money and pulls away, Genii just needs to find another sponsor, and their F1 team can carry on without any disturbance.

Genii Capital runs the F1 team, while Proton and Group Lotus have nothing to do with the actual F1 racing.

first you gotta get past my boys at Mclaren first. Everybody remembers the red and white Marlboro Mclarens more than the lotuses, everybody knows that. and of the scarlet Ferarris.
