Suzuki Grand Vitara given small facelift in Japan

Suzuki has just given the Suzuki Grand Vitara a cosmetic update in Japan, where it is known as the Suzuki Escudo. Changes are on the surface, but enough to give the Grand Vitara a different look. There’s a new grille, a new bumper design, small changes to the headlamp design, and new alloy wheels. The rear tyre holder has also gone missing. There is also a new colour called Brown Pearl Metallic – yet another car manufacturer has embraced brown as a vehicle colour.

I wonder if this update will eventually reach our shores – the Grand Vitara is sold here for RM120k OTR with insurance. Frankly, I think I prefer the current one sold here, as the new grille and the lack of a spare tyre mounted on the tailgate has softened the look of the SUV.

Current Grand Vitara looks better.Somehow at the first glance, the front looks like Pajero lol.And WTF is that a “side mirror” attached on the fender?!Is that necessary to add on so that it makes the feel back into 90s?OMG…

BMW BEST: That’s a blind spot mirror required by law in Japan (Once a vehicle meets a certain height or size, IIRC.). You can also see those on some LHD imports too (E.g. The U.S. built Chevrolet Trailblazer (Ancient American SUV not related to the SUV of the same name launched recently in Thailand.) or LHD Mercedes Benz R Class.).

Some SUVs/ minivans make do with a much more subtle blind spot mirror mounted under the passenger side wing mirror, or a camera.

Agree, the current one looks handsome and muscular. This new version’s front design looks sloppy – like a gaping jaw of slobbering arowana. This is an unfortunate regression from Suzuki, sigh.

I have always liked the Vitara, from the first generation that came to our shores. Only drove it for about 2 days when I rented one at the former Penang Mutiara Hotel. The V6 was probably best. But in truth, that first generation was probably the most beautiful of the lot. I think it was designed by an Italian design house, was it not?

The designers’ brains were irradiated. Mazda6 doesn’t have to be changed to the new Camry.
