Great Wall Haval M4 – MT/AT, Malaysian launch in June

great-wall-m4

The facelifted Wingle 5 isn’t the only Great Wall coming to Malaysia; the pick-up truck will be joined by the Great Wall Haval M4, as promoted on Great Wall Motors Malaysia’s Facebook page. A soft launch for the compact SUV will happen in the third week of June, which is less than a month from now.

The M4’s arrival is not a surprise, because a left-hand drive example has been living in the Green Oranges showroom in Glenmarie since January, and ads soliciting bookings appeared on oto.my in March. A starting price of RM50k has been suggested.

The Great Wall Haval M4 is powered by a 1.5 litre engine with 105 hp and 138 Nm. The VVT-equipped unit will be available with manual and automatic transmissions in Malaysia, and the latter could be in conjunction with 4WD. The compact SUV will be locally assembled in Gurun, Kedah.

RM50k compact SUV anyone?

      Siap dengan nama ‘M4’.
The low price is actually VERY attractive…

      ..
      .
wait what did that Tiguan cost just now? To be fair that’s a bigger, stronger car with turbo but with the difference of RM 130k…

A good ‘kembara’ replacement model :D

The difference in taxes isn’t big between local cars and imported (probably CKD?) ones.

This is a really, REALLY cheap car. Extremely cheap to produce. Don’t expect any quality or safety.

I read that the 1.5L engine is related to the engine in the Avanza (1NZ-FE). Anyone got more info about this?

Thumb up 8 Thumb down 0
    • Green on May 30, 2014 at 1:51 pm

      It’s Great Wall Engine.
but it resemble Toyota Avanza 1.5 engine.

however, this is only a copy version, not made nor QAQC by Toyota. Reliability is not there. Finding through online u can see there are reliability issue of Great Wall Engine.

    • since when avanza use 1NZ-FE?

Thumb up 4 Thumb down 0
      • not sure Avanza engine or 1NZ-FE.

but the output resemble closely to Avanza’s 3SZ-VE instead of 1NZ-FE.

1NZ-FE is used in Vios. Would be too cool to see this Budget Engineer’s car-to be so fuel saving.

Support Great Wall Motors. Don’t make fun of them.

They are giving many young Malaysians jobs and careers by assembling their cars in Kedah instead of Thailand or Indonesia like most non-national car companies. GWM has mentioned that they have intentions to export the assembled-in-Malaysia cars to other ASEAN countries as well.

GWM may not make particularly good cars, but at least they mean well. In the next decade, GWM will definitely grow to great heights, as will all other major Chinese car companies.

Agreed with you on the jobs part but could it be also that those countries provide great incentives and a stable automotive policy for those ‘large’ carmakers to make ‘big’ investments over a given period?

We humans always look for the best offer/deal and i’m sure that if one’s going to invest a few billion they will also look for these same qualities. Afterall, they don’t ‘owe’ it to us to give our rakyat jobs. :)

I have neither driven nor ride on a Chinese car, but my personal experience with Chery is bitter, it was on display at one of the mall, the Eastar and Tiggo, and the door creaks, forgivable in a 20-odd year old Saga, not a Showroom-fresh car no matter what price; Strong plastic smell and fiddly fit and finish. It is about as good quality as a 2nd, badly modded Wiralution. And I am worried this will be the same.

But hey AVH, didn’t you say you like GWM?

So why do I like GWM? and espacially the Wingle, its honesty…..It’s a truck!!. Its very utilitarian, its cheap, The cargobay is made with strong Maotanium and what brakes in the interior isn’t going to matter because theres nothing there, it’ll be replaced like the 2-din radio. Its like cars of the 80s, anything brakes and get the hammer. No computer or anything. To many extand its a 1st gen Toyota Hilux. Hey boss its broken, I’ll just celophane tape it. And if it is one thing the chinese make awesome, are cheap and cheerful, no refinement whatsoever, workhorse. The M4 isn’t that.

Put it this way, The Chinese Commercial car industry is about 25 years old(Hey Proton!), the Chinese Military Industry…trucks, tanks and so on, thats 70 odd years already!

To be honest…I’d rather drive a Proton over some Chinese made crap. Until it is proven to be reliable and safe then I’d go for GW
