Lebuhraya Damansara-Puchong (LDP) concessionaire Litrak has announced that the morning LDP contraflow traffic system that it began trialling for six months from December last year will now be made permanent, according to a report by The Star. The northbound contraflow runs from Puchong right after the IOI Mall up to the Petaling Jaya Toll Plaza.

Litrak chief executive officer Sazally Said mentioned that the system had stabilised after an initial chaotic start on the first day, and improvements have come about following complaints and feedback from road users as well as observations made by Litrak during the trial period.

He said the main aim of the system is to improve traffic and manage its flow, especially at the Petaling Jaya Toll Plaza, which is massively congested during morning peak hours. He added that much of the congestion was due to traffic coming in from the Federal Highway at the Motorola Interchange.

Studies had shown that of the 11,480 vehicles moving northbound during peak hours, about a third (3,700) head towards Kelana Jaya and the northern exits, lending the need for the contraflow lane.

During the six-month trial period, studies as well as traffic counts carried out by Litrak’s engineers noted that the the queue on the mainline was shortened to between 400 and 800 metres. The report adds that the queue for those using the contraflow up until the toll plaza currently measures between 300 and 700 metres.

Sazally said that the system aids in saving on travel time. Before it was implemented, the average travel time was 22 minutes to make the four kilometre run from IOI Mall to the toll plaza. “Now, road users on the mainline take about 17 minutes to travel, while contra-flow users take about 13 minutes,” he explained.

In our earlier reports, it was stated that the contraflow lane begins at KM21 (Kelana Jaya-bound) of the LDP in Puchong (opposite HSBC, right after IOI Mall), with the exit at KM18. The contraflow lane is for light vehicles and Touch n Go users only.

The adoption of the system means that Plaza A at the Petaling Jaya Toll Plaza in the opposite direction (from Sunway) will be closed during the operating period. Motorists from Sunway to KESAS/Puchong can continue to use Plaza B during contraflow hours.
