It was back in July when the Ferrari 488 Spider was revealed online in its new shade of Blu Corsa. Now, we have pictures from its public debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
While it may share the same design cues as its coupe sibling, the Ferrari 488 GTB, the main difference here is the “patented retractable hardtop” that transforms the coupe into a convertible in only 14 seconds. Ferrari claims that the whole assembly weighs 25 kg less than an equivalent soft-top setup.
The vehicle, which Maranello says is its “most aerodynamically-efficient spider ever,” features a small rear window that can be lowered for more noise or deployed to reduce the buffeting when the top is down.
Apart from a blown spoiler and an aerodynamic underbody for more downforce, the space frame chassis is 23% stiffer than the 458 Spider, according to the automaker. The 1,525 kg offering rides on 20-inch wheels with staggered tyres, 245/35 up front and 305/30 at the rear.
It’s powered by the same mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged 3,902 cc V8 seen on the 488 GTB, and the F154 CB’s output remains the same – 670 PS at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm.
With accompanying seven-speed Getrag dual-clutch F1 transmission, the Spider achieves the century sprint in three seconds and hits a top speed of 325 km/h, just five less than the GTB. Driver assistance systems for the 488 Spider are likewise carried over from the 488 GTB, which made its Malaysian debut in June.
