Toyota does not have a high performance hot hatch in its product range. That, however, might change soon as Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer of Toyota, is considering a performance variant of the Toyota Yaris, CarAdvice reports.

Tada, who is also the man behind the Toyota 86, said at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show that “we need a real hot hatch for the Toyota brand. Because we, Toyota, already announced the comeback to WRC for 2017.” The Toyota Yaris has already been confirmed to be the brand’s official WRC racer.

“Yaris, what do you think about Yaris?” the engineer asked journalists present in Tokyo. Tada however noted that he isn’t too particular as to whether it will be a Yaris or a longer Corolla, reiterating that the creation of a Toyota hot hatch is the main intent. “I don’t mind which base car is better or not. I will make a real competitive hot hatch,” he said.

There was no mention of what outputs the car might have. However, when questioned as to whether the Toyota’s hot hatch would be paired up against the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and Polo GTI, Tada replied, “we must beat it.”

He also specified as to what he would be looking for in the hatchback. “No big turbo,” he indicated. Tada continued, “nowadays we don’t need any all-wheel drive.” Therefore, the performance hatch would likely be a front-wheel drive, turbocharged car, if that’s any indication to go by.

As to whether the brand’s participation in the 2017 WRC and the future hatch will be associated with each other, Tada acknowledged that they will. However, he felt that such a connection wasn’t entirely needed. “I’ve already got a same kind of question from Akio Toyoda. At that time, I always reply, ‘motorsport and production cross variations is already old fashioned. A long time ago it was real,” he concluded.
