BMW Malaysia updated its Facebook page today, announcing a new 1 Series variant that joins the 120i M Sport, currently the sole member of the facelifted range. Some digging around revealed that the new model is the BMW 118i Sport, which will almost certainly become the cheapest BMW in Malaysia.
Instead of the 1.6 litre four-cylinder mill in the 120i, the 118i is powered for the first time in the 1 Series’ history with a 1.5 litre TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine. It’s identical to the one fitted to the recently-unveiled BMW 318i Luxury, and produces the same 136 hp at 4,400 rpm and 220 Nm from 1,250-4,300 rpm. As usual, an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission is standard fare.
As this car comes in Sport Line guise, the 118i gets unique bumpers with gloss black highlights, as well as different side skirts. There are also two-tone 17-inch star-spoke wheels – an inch down on the 18-inch M Sport wheels of the 120i – shod in 225/45R17 tyres. Full-LED headlights have been retained.
Inside, there are power-adjustable sport seats upholstered Sensatec leather (120i seats are cloth/Alcantara), gloss black trim with matte red highlights, a multifunction sports steering wheel, push-button start, dual-zone automatic air-con, auto lights and wipers, as well as a BMW Professional Audio sound system with a 6.5-inch iDrive display.
Safety equipment comprises six airbags (two front, two side, two curtain), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) inclusive of ABS, Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC) and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), as well as ISOFIX child seat anchors at the rear.
Pricing for the BMW 118i Sport has yet to be announced. As usual, stay tuned and we will let you know more information on the car as soon as we have them.

Aww and here I thought they were also launching the more powerful LCI 125i to compete with more powerful rivals like the GTI and Megane RS.
Those wouldnt sell though. The image of the 1 series here is that if an entry level bimmer.

On the other hand, this BMW is rear wheel drive unlike the A class. The feeling is different. Furthermore many A250 buyers don’t realize how jarring the merc’s ride can be until they live with it daily.
