Renault Kaptur teased, set for Russian market debut

Renault-Kaptur-Teaser

Renault Russia has released a teaser image (and video) for its upcoming Kaptur 4×4 crossover, which is set to be unveiled on March 30, 2016. The model is set to be locally-produced at Renault’s Moscow plant but why the curiously similar name to the Captur?

Well, according to reports, the decision to adopt the ‘Kaptur’ moniker was done after the company organised a survey among Russian customers where it was revealed that the letter ‘K’ provides the ‘Russian Touch’ for the new model. Or maybe they like the Moscow Kremlin a lot, who knows.

Nonetheless, the Kaptur seen in the teaser image is largely blackened-out as in most teasers, with certain highlights shining through, literally. They are the car’s headlamps and C-shaped positioning lights. Other visible details here include a muscular hood outline, flower-pattern wheels and a prominent Renault logo located on the grille.

Even without viewing the car under brightly-lit conditions, it’s easy to tell that the Kaptur is not just a renamed Captur, but a different car entirely. Under the metal, the Kaptur will reportedly ride on the Renault Duster’s platform.

Spyshots of an unknown prototype Renault SUV which we posted previously, do appear to resemble the Kaptur in terms of looks (looking at the design cues). At the time, it was highly suggested that the ‘larger Captur’ will be called the ‘Grand Captur’ to distinguish itself from the regular car.

As the name clearly suggests, the Kaptur is an all-wheel drive vehicle, while the Captur is front-wheel drive. However, Renault Russia did not disclose any details on the Kaptur’s engine line-up. Expect the company’s TCe 90 and TCe 120 turbocharged petrol, and the dCi 90 diesel mills to be options, with a manual gearbox and Renault’s EDC dual-clutch transmission attached.
