Honda has kicked off a new web series that pays tribute to its automotive heritage and history in the US. The documentary-style showcase will feature the restoration an iconic Honda N600 – the Japanese car maker’s first model to debut in North America.
Called “Serial One,” what makes the show even more special is that the N600 being restored is literally the very first production unit in the US, bearing the 1,000,001 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The vehicle was found sitting in a “junk pile collecting dust for almost 50 years.”
Known for his experience with restoring up to 1,000 N600s in his day and having owned one himself, Tim Mings is the man charged with restoring the iconic “kei-car”. The N600 has an all-alloy 600 cc engine with up to 45 hp, and revved all the way up to 9,000 rpm. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 19 seconds and has a top speed of 130 km/h.
“The Serial One series documents the very first N600’s journey to make an incredible comeback, sharing Mings’ progress and some special surprises along the way. Each week fans can follow the journey as Honda brings an important piece of its history back to life,” Honda explains in its official announcement.
“We’re so proud to bring the story of Honda’s roots in the US to life through the restoration of this vehicle,” said Alicia Jones, Honda social media manager. “Finding Serial One, the very first Honda N600 test vehicle in America, and documenting the meticulous process of bringing it back to life really embodies the Honda spirit. We can’t wait for viewers to come along with us on this journey,” she said.
