In a study carried out via the public works department (JKR), the Malaysian works ministry is said to be testing the use of hard rubber in road asphalt mixtures. According to Bernama, deputy minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin confirmed that several pilot projects were ongoing.

“The project which was completed last December (2015) is at Jalan Gemas-Rompin, Negeri Sembilan while the other four projects, namely one each in Kedah, Pahang, Kelantan and Selangor will be completed this year,” she said at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

“At the moment, JKR, together with the Malaysian Rubber Board is analysing the performance of the road pavement at the site which has been completed,” she said. It was previously reported that rubberised roads had proven to have a longer lifespan compared to normal tarmac.

However, the deputy minister explained that there still are other factors that need to be considered before moving ahead. These include the availability of the necessary raw materials, the suitability of equipment, the quality of the bitumen rubber produced and the overall cost of the new methods.
