No more toll booth and barriers; zoom through by 2020

Karak-highway

That’s right, there will be no more toll plaza booths and barriers on Malaysian highways by 2020 if all goes to plan. Just zoom through with cashless payment, as we will adopt the multi-lane free flow (MLFF) system for highways by then, New Straits Times reports.

Deputy Works Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said the system will enable faster cashless toll collection without the use of booths on highways. She also revealed the gradual steps and timelines.

“This will be carried out after we introduce the single lane free flow in 2019. The Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system is already being implemented in stages. We are targeting 126 toll plazas to implement the system while cash payment for tolls will cease by 2018.

“After a full conversion of the ETC system on all highways, we will proceed with the single lane free flow and multi-lane free flow later in 2020. It will see the use of a sticker installed on vehicles (stored with value for payment). The system will be backed by a service provider which is currently offered by Touch N Go.

“With MLFF, the cashless payment will be carried out at high speed as it will not have any plaza booths with barricades,” she said in reply to a question by Datuk Seri Boon Som Inong in the Dewan Negara. PLUS could be already testing the system.

Rosnah added that based on a study by the Malaysian Highway Authority, ETC has managed to reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas between 30% to 50%.

“The usage rate among motorists have also increased from 65% to 85% (after implementation of ETC), as it allows them to save time. An average of six seconds is needed for payment at Touch N Go lanes, three seconds at Smart Tag lanes, compared to 15 seconds at cash booths,” she explained.

This was implemented in Australia and Singapore 10 years ago. People no need to even stop and cause jams.

In Malaysia, we like to give free jobs to toll operators. I toll station got like 100 people manning the place (excluding the bangladeshis who clean and sweep the highway)

Half of them sleep in office. Have you gone to the Touch and Go counters and see no one there when you want to reload? Have to press the bell for 5 minutes before the lady comes to the counter

This is Malaysian style. All rilaks in the toll station, play internet, some even got office romance (toll station romance) going on.

    • Those are relatively low traffic countries. High traffic countries like USA, Japan UK etc still uses conventional toll.

    • Actually Melbourne’s citylink (in Australia) has been around since 1999 and used this automated toll system from day one.
This makes the system at least 17 years old!

Yesterday news was Najib wants to make a taller twin towers than Mahathir’s Petronas Twin Tower.

In Malaysia, we like to make the biggest this and longest that but important things like this electronic system, we don’t know how to do 10 years ago.

Go to Australia and see, all toll booths no jam. People just speed through at 100KM.

In Malaysia, the tolls are the biggest cause of jams.

If the toll booths are the main cause for traffic jam than why it’s still jammed after the toll. Don’t just be a keyboard warrior. Learn to get the facts before talking

Maybe not everyone driving a rocket car like you, they need to accelerate from a standstill. If the flow of cars slow down on a busy road, jam will happen regardless of whether there is a toll or not.

      • You cannot deny the fact toll booths do cause traffic jam on certain highways. I was many a time stuck on this highway which had banners everywhere saying how much time could be saved and etc. But the traffic jam was caused by their own toll booths. It’s ironic, isn’t it?

        Toll booths create bottlenecks.

Likewise, having 10 lanes for toll booths then getting all of them to merge back into 2 lanes will also be a high bottleneck.

Come 2020, will be deferred for whatever reason. Just like the “promise” of lowered car prices.

Politicians here good at making promises that they can’t keep.

Our highway authorities knew that free flow toll lanes would reduce the massive jam at high volume toll booths years ago as Singapore & other countries started to implement it.

The problems with implementing this system here is that we Malaysians like to cheat the system (clone cards + dozens more methods etc). The issue on enforcement and how to catch non payers need to be resolved first.

We Malaysians don’t like to follow rules, simple traffic rules like stop on red also susah wanna follow, so how?

Another problem is Malaysians don’t want to change. Look at the current toll booths that implements electronic payment only. Left most lanes that supposed to be for top – ups end up becoming cash lane. If the highway operator refuse to accept cash payments, these people will run amok, cursing & swearing with parang coming out. So how?

Change our attitude first, else anything good implemented will not work.

Will the roads still change from example 10 lanes to exit to 2-3 lanes like the stupid NKVE Subang toll where its free for all after paying, not a single officer or staff seen to help direct traffic or place cones to guide motorist…even if freeflow still will jam if two lanes likethe Plus highway

anyway i doubt is good idea with the driving attitude of people…even now got toll booth, i still see alot of car speeding towards the toll…as if racing against each other to see who pay & exit toll faster…sick mentality
