5er touring spy 5

The next-generation G31 BMW 5 Series Touring has been sighted running road trials again, but now more camo has been shed from the car as it gets ever closer to its introduction. The new 5er range, led by the G30 sedan, is expected to make its debut in Paris, taking the fight to the W213 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, which made its debut earlier this year.

The cleaner view of the car highlights what’s been intimated all along, that the 5er’s looks haven’t been radically overhauled. Evolutionary by any reckoning, new elements include revised headlamps flowing into a more prominent kidney grille in the vein of the G11/G12 BMW 7 Series, as well as new bumpers and body panels. The series production car is expected to feature OLED rear lamps.

Much of the new is encased under the sheetmetal. The Touring, sedan and Gran Turismo (known as the G32) siblings, is underpinned by the automaker’s CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform, previously known as the 35up.

First seen on the G11/G12 BMW 7 Series, the platform – consisting of a mix of aluminium, high-strength steel, magnesium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) for materials – will enable the seventh-gen estate to tip the scales around 100 kg less than the current model.

The estate will feature the same petrol and diesel powertrain options that will be available for the G30, and a plug-in hybrid setup – as seen on the X5 xDrive40e – is set to be offered on the new car.

Inside, we’ve had a glimpse of what to expect through some spyshots, the latest of which was just last week, through photos of a G32 GT’s interior. Elements will of course include the fifth-generation iDrive system, with gesture control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming into the mix.
