Mercedes-AMG confirms GT4 race car development

With GT4 racing gaining momentum lately, Mercedes-AMG has announced that it will be building its own race car for the motorsport class, based on the recent AMG GT R.

The AMG GT4 will be developed for AMG’s Customer Sports programme, where the AMG GT3, which replaced the SLS AMG GT3, currently competes in various racing series around the world. The company has yet to reveal the actual car, so these illustrations will have to do for now.

Appearing as souped-up version of the GT R, the race car boasts more aero components, along with a hood intake and a large rear wing. However, the modifications aren’t as extreme as seen on the AMG GT3 to ensure the car remains relatively more affordable, which helps make the GT4 category more accessible to a wider audience.

Unfortunately, AMG’s announcement of the GT4 is pretty short on details, but it is likely the race car will adopt the GT R’s 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, although tuned to a different output (stock motor outputs 577 hp and 699 Nm of torque). We’ll also have to wait for the full reveal for other info such as the vehicle’s weight, as well as any other modifications.

Other automakers offering a GT4 race car include BMW with its M4 GT4, Porsche with its Cayman GT4 Clubsport, Ford with its Mustang GT4 and McLaren with its 570S GT4.
