2018 Honda Accord – production begins at Ohio plant

Honda of America Manufacturing (HAM) has celebrated the start of mass production of the all-new 2018 Honda Accord, a nameplate that has been sold in America for over four decades, with over 12.7 million units sold since its debut in 1976.

According to the company, an investment of US$267 million (about RM1.11 billion) and the addition of 300 new personnel were necessary to support the production of the Accord at its Marysville Auto Plant (MAP) and engine plant in Anna, Ohio.

The monetary investment includes US$220 million for a new weld department featuring 342 state-of-the-art welding robots, as well as US$47 million for production of the Accord’s 1.5 and 2.0 litre turbocharged engines, the first time turbo power is introduced to the model.

Manufacturing the tenth-generation Accord will involve a laser brazing process for the car’s roof and new stamping techniques to create its sculpted body. High-performance adhesives are also used to provide improved body rigidity, while acoustic spray foam enhances cabin quietness.

“The new jobs and production growth will enable us to meet anticipated strong demand for the new Honda Accord. Re-imagining the new Accord and bringing it to life took an incredible effort by our project team and our associates. The privilege of producing America’s best-selling car for the last 41 years is a significant point of pride for our associates,” said Rob May, plant manager at MAP.

The MAP facility has also gained a new sub-assembly process for the Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) that will help power the tenth-gen-based Accord Hybrid. Where the current Accord Hybrid is produced at Honda’s Sayama plant near Tokyo, the new one will see production return to Ohio.

As a fun fact, the Accord is the first Honda vehicle to be made in America, and has been in continuous production at MAP since November 1982 – with cumulative U.S. production exceeding 11 million units over 35 years.

  • honda knows majority of their buyers usually skip a generation when replacing their cars, that is why the 10th generation looks markedly different to the 9th to appeal to a different group of customers
