With iron-fisted environmentalists being at the forefront of emissions control, more and more car manufacturers have since taken to the downsizing route. To help those aggrieved cope, some companies, like Mercedes-AMG swear by their engine-making prowess to make smaller engines thrill with as much aural stimulation.
But what if you take away the glorious-sounding, naturally-aspirated M156 6.2 litre V8 in favour of a hand-built M177 4.0 litre bi-turbo V8 for the C 63? Don’t get us wrong. Blown engines can certainly pack a bigger punch – the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S in this video cranks a whopping 510 hp and 700 Nm of torque – and weigh less, making cars feel more nimble and sprint quicker than their big-bored counterparts. In comparison, the W204 C 63 gets 451 hp (-59 hp) and 600 Nm (-100 Nm) from the NA V8.
But when it comes to sound, is there really no replacement for displacement (we’re talking bout you, F1 cars)? Mercedes-AMG makes some of the best sounding engines by far, from the M133 2.0 litre four bangers in the 45-series cars to the roaring M178 4.0 litre in the AMG GT.
