JPJ has issued 417,684 summonses through Awas

Travelling this holiday season? Make sure you adhere to traffic rules because there will be eyes watching. The Road Transport Department (JPJ) had issued a total of 417,684 summonses through its Automated Awareness Safety System (Awas) since May, Bernama reports. Awas integrates AES (Automated Enforcement System) with the Kejara demerit points system.

According to JPJ’s deputy director-general of planning and operations, Datuk Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman, of the total, 385,474 summonses were issued for speeding offences and 32,210 for running the traffic lights. There are 21 spots where Awas cameras are in place nationwide, but more will be coming on-stream very soon.

“Another 11 Awas system that have been installed nationwide are expected to begin 24-hour operations in January to instil awareness to abide by regulations among drivers,” he told reporters at a press conference for Ops Patuh in Rawang yesterday. He added the next wave will include two speed cameras in Selangor, five traffic light cameras in Perak and four in Kedah.

Offenders won’t be let off lightly. Late last month, deputy transport minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said that recipients of Awas summonses after May 2017 have a month to settle their compound fines, failing which the JPJ will begin hauling them to court early next year.
