2018 Kia Picanto launched in Malaysia – RM49,888

2018 Kia Picanto launched in Malaysia – RM49,888

Onwards to the first car launch in Malaysia this year – the 2018 Kia Picanto has been introduced today at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC). The A-segment hatchback makes its return to the market as the only non-national model left in the entry-level segment. There’s only one variant available – a 1.2 EX automatic priced at RM49,888 on-the-road without insurance.

The 1.2 litre Kappa II naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine on offer will be familiar to owners of the outgoing model and produces 84 PS at 6,000 rpm and 122 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Also carried over is the four-speed automatic transmission – there’s no manual option this time.

Visually, the new Picanto is distinguished through new projector halogen headlights with U-shaped LED daytime running lights forming a continuous line instead of being individual diodes. Kia’s signature “tiger nose” grille has also been widened to meet the headlights.

Down the sides, the previously straight window line is now upswept at the front and rear, while the wheel arches have been emphasised to give the illusion of a stronger stance. The rear design is more angular as well, with larger LED tail lights. Unfortunately, we don’t get the more aggressive GT Line styling package available in other markets, which also includes visible twin exhaust exits.

The interior, meanwhile, has been made noticeably more upscale than the one before, which was already several steps above the A-segment norm. There’s now a dual-tier dashboard with a Rio-style floating head unit sitting above the twin horizontal centre air vents.

Also, the corner air vents are now vertical and in an unusual lozenge shape, giving the cabin a quirky spin on things. The current two-spoke steering wheel with a grin-like decorative trim piece has also been switched out for a three-spoke item from the Optima, while the air-con switchgear has gained a concave shape.

2018 Kia Picanto launched in Malaysia – RM49,888

Measuring 3,595 mm long, 1,595 mm wide and 1,485 mm tall, the new Picanto retains mostly the same dimensions as its predecessor, although it is 5 mm lower and its 2,400 mm wheelbase is 15 mm longer. Despite this, the car is claimed to offer more headroom, shoulder room and legroom both front and rear, and luggage space has increased from a minuscule 200 litres to 255 litres, thanks to a more efficient design.

The new Picanto is said to be safer than before, using double the amount of advanced high strength steel as before, at 44%. There’s also a number of soundproofing measures for reduced noise, vibration and harshness, plus stiffer anti-roll bars and a quicker steering rack for improved handling.

2018 Kia Picanto launched in Malaysia – RM49,888

Standard kit includes 14-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, keyless entry, push-button start, auto headlights, manual fabric seats, Bluetooth and six speakers, plus safety kit such as six airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist and stability control – all of which were already offered on the outgoing model. What is new is the seven-inch infotainment touchscreen incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

As usual, a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty is offered with the Picanto. There are five colour options available – Pop Orange, Lime Light, Honey Bee, Clear White and Titanium Silver – and Naza Kia is also reintroducing the Novus brand of accessories here.

Incorporating a bodykit, solar window tint, leather seats and a dashcam, the Novus X is priced at RM5,618, while the Novus S with just the bodykit is priced at RM3,498. Browse full specifications and equipment on CarBase.my.

This is what you call game changer. At least the Koreans, a foreigner, has reduced prices. Our Proton Iriz, past few years never reduced prices.

It takes a foreigner to show that they care for Malaysians.

Our Proton was created to give cheap cars to Malaysians. But Iriz and Persona prices are so high. So many years, not reduced at all for the rakyat.

We don’t want greedy companies as our local car company

In 1985, a brand new Toyota Corolla in Malaysia was RM20k. In 2017, the same Corolla, now called Altis is RM139k

          A 700% jump in price from 1985 to 2017

But the same Corolla in Japan from 1985 to 2017 has only gone up 40%

All car prices went up because of Proton. To protect Proton. It is time to end all this now.

          We Malaysians want cheaper cars.

Looks like the Koreans have decided to give us the 30% price reduction promised by our Government.

When will GLC linked Proton give the 30% price reduction in their cars too?

According to specs, the Picanto’s 1.25 litre engine is 24 percent (62 vs 50kw) more powerful and has 34 percent more torque than the engine in the Axia. This should translate to a much nippier car as it is only 10 percent heavier than the Perodua.

Adults should learn to buy car based on specs, rather than features. This car looks like fun to drive. Bringing back the memories of a Kelisa. For small car with Kappa engine, I would say the ratio between body and engine performance is reasonably good. However most people concern about the build quality, reliability and the dealer effort to ensure after sales/service is good enough for the customer to enjoy the fun of drive of small car.

If only the car has disc brake with single pot, and multilink suspension, then the car can be a collector series. Easy to balik kampung and navigate nearby sawah padi/pendang. Watching sunset will ear char kuey teow.

In my brief test drove of previous gen, i actually really liked the picanto, it feels very refined, noticably better NVH than any proton or perodua.

To hear this gen improved on it, more high tensile steel usage, and a dropped price tag to rm50k, i think it looks like a really good buy.

But comes with apple carplay and android auto to please the younger gens and with great safety system that will inevitably protect them. This we must thank the Proton Iriz for contributing to the breakthrough of standardizing safety features that the Picanto adopted, without it, Kia would have inevitably downgrade and therefore, con us with a lower quality product.

But somehow despite all the new model launches, Naza still fails to sell more than maybe 4500 Kias per annum. Everything that gets launched and has Samson’s thumbs up in it eventually flops. #OnRepeat for the past few years. Dealers cannot make money lah. Even Naza axed their own branches. If branches not profitable how are dealers gonna make money? If cannot make money how to serve customers well?

I never really think about RV in purchasing a car, anyway if u did, you probably shouldn’t have gotten a Picanto, you’d be better off with Myvi regardless how well specced a Picanto was.

Personally I have an iriz cvt pre-facelift, it’s just horrible to drive with that shitty gearbox. That said, I’d still have use for it, so I only think of using it instead of lamenting proton no RV hurr durr. As long as you use it, you get value out of it and feel less about losing RV. In the first place, I bought the Iriz in December with massive cash discount, so it helps that I feel I can’t lose RV if I don’t pay much in the first place *point to head*.

I am always kinda trolling here, the kerajaan bit is running joke about bila harga barang naik, marah kerajaan. Bila harga turun, kenapa tak puji kerajaan? Kangkung dan Picanto sudah turun, cukurlah kerajaan prihatin kehendak rakyat.

Have you ever driven a Picanto before? I own the previous generation Picanto with similar engine & transmission – I can drive 160 km/h on the highway with ease. The car feels incredibly stable at that speeds, compared to a bigger Myvi which feels floaty at 100 km/h.

The dealers mostly pair manual transmission with the lowest spec variant. Those who want better spec and manual gearbox end up with choosing the better spec variants and foregoing the manual gearbox. So it then looks like ‘nobody’ wants manual gearboxes.

For a bread & butter city car, makes no difference between manual & auto. It’s not like with manual transmission you’re going to get higher performance.

If it’s a more expensive performance car, then it’s reasonable.

So far, the biggest complaint I hear from owners of the Axia automatic is the lack of pulling power, especially when there’s more than just the driver on board. It looks like the extra 250 cc and 34 percent torque in this Kia may well be the most useful “feature” you receive for that extra RM8k over the top Axia.

The previous gen City came with only 2 spec and it lagged behind in sales to the Dugong-Vios which has I think 6 specs, more than 5 i recalled even with superior equipment list. The base spec City and Jazz dips in a price region where most people can actually afford <RM80k

Other than attractive equipment which in line with modern standard, another one thing that new 2018 Picanto have that is totally opposite with new 2018 Myvi is inclusion of ‘water temperature gauge’ where previous gen Picanto doesn’t have it and previous gen Myvi have it (even if looks like old school since it was in analogue form, but still better than none at all in new Myvi which we are really pissed off).

Kudos to Naza kia for priced the New Picanto competitively and reasonable as compared to over price P2 Axia Advance. Its really a good buy and shocking price for non-national brand in Malaysia.

Kia Picanto wins in term of styling and safety.

P2 Axia wins in term of fuel efficiency and space.

Kia 1.2 kappa Dual DVVT =17.8KM/LITTER
    P2 1.0 VVTI= 22.1KM/LITTER

    KIA New Picanto RM49K++
    P2 Axia Advance RM44K++

A Very good start for 2018 and now and onwards pls price all ur other future product same as competitive as nw. 1st pls bring down the price of New Kia Rio (less than Rm60k better) to VS with P1 Persona. Coming all new cerato 2018 less than Rm80k better to VS with other Japanese brand sedan or national brand within the same price range model.

      > 22.1 km/L

“internal lab testing” ie 99% won’t achieve it in real world condition.

In real world, based on what owners are reporting, they’re more or less the same, plenty can report >13 km/L in urban driving.

Neither then have an advantage to claim who’s more fuel efficient. Manufacturer claim can campak longkang.

I’m driving standard manual Axia, and fuel consumption is between 18.0km/L to 19.5km/L. Best i achieved is 21km/L when cruising on highway. Plus, not really driving at low RPM (as it is manual, i always revs higher before shifting). Aircon also always put on lower temp.

Still not included armrest, auto brake, idle stop, heated steering & seat those feature already given at continental. No wonder price can reduce to otr 49,888,especially idle stop, can save a lot of fuel when traffic jam, So i hope next time facelifted can put at least idle stop feature at the car.

    • Agreed that the armrest is good to have.

But why do we need heated steering wheel and seat? Maybe we are getting to have winter soon.

Also why idle stop? Ask those who’s driving cars with idle stop function, 99% of them will have the function turned to off every time they are driving, if given the option.

Auto braking? Better concentrate when driving instead of this, as it’s mostly activated during low speed driving only.
