BMW Z4 gets teased ahead of debut at Pebble Beach

BMW has confirmed that an all-new production car will make its world debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 23. The German automaker didn’t reveal any information about the upcoming model, merely providing this up-close photo of a camouflaged vehicle’s front end.

If we had to make an informed guess, this will be the final, production-ready version of the company’s Z4 sports car, which will arrive a year after a concept first made its debut at the same venue. Those pins on the car’s kidney grilles are a big giveaway, appearing identical to what we’ve seen in unofficial and official spyshots of the past.

Official details released by BMW reveal the Z4 range will feature an M40i variant as the performance flagship, which will feature an inline-six engine (likely a 3.0 litre turbo paired with an eight-speed automatic), lowered sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, a newly developed front axle, M light alloy wheels with a staggered tyre set-up, M sports brake system and an electronically controlled lock in the rear axle differential.

The new Z4 (codename G29) will also bring back the retractable soft top that was present on the first four generations of BMW Z cars save for the E89 it replaces. Despite this, BMW promises “agile handling, spontaneity and precision when changing direction and ‘accelerating in dynamic style’ out of bends, without sacrifice in comfort.”

To go along with the preliminary information, BMW has previously provided a generous number of photos of a wrapped prototype undergoing testing at its Miramas test centre in the south of France. With all this in mind, the teaser image posted at the start does appear to be a little pointless, but hype must be built!

The new Z4 is due to go on sale early next year following its reveal, and will have a distant sibling in the form of the A90 Toyota Supra. Both cars will utilise the same platform as part of a joint venture involving BMW and Toyota, but each will have their own distinct styling and performance setups. “Suffice it to say that this new model will certainly be an emotional addition to the BMW range,” the release reads.
