SPYSHOTS: smart EQ forfour facelift spotted testing

Mercedes-Benz’ compact car brand, smart has the forthcoming facelifted version of its forfour model out on test, as spotted by our spy photographers, and it appears that the four-door model will receive exterior updates that won’t be very far removed from what the current model wears at present.

The product roadmap released by Mercedes-Benz last year noted that the smart EQ facelifts for both the fortwo and the forfour are due to arrive at the end of this year, and the brand will go fully electric in 2020. The changes that will go towards the update should include a revised front bumper and grille, as should a new set of headlamps and tail lights. Wheels could be updated for the forfour facelift, too.

Both this and the even more compact two-seater fortwo are expected to feature the same exterior updates; feasible, as both were released in their current forms at the same time five years ago. Powertrain details for the revised compact models have yet to surface, though these are likely to develop from the 60 kW (81 hp) electric motor mated to a single-speed transmission for more power and range.

Battery and charger specifications have also yet to surface, although for reference the 2018 nightsky editions were announced last year along with a 22 kW onboard fast charger that enables the electric models to be charged from 10% to 80% in 40 minutes with a commercial three-phase charging system. Inside, revisions to upholstery and trim as well as electronics can be expected to keep the forfour fresh.
