Audi developing PPE-based four-door coupe – report

The first fully-electric Audi model to be built on the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture will be an A5 Sportback-sized four-door coupe, co-developed with Volkswagen Group stablemate Porsche. This will sport a frontal design echoing that of the e-tron GT concept and with styling similar to the A7 Sportback, said Autocar; the magazine previously reported the car as slated for launch in 2023.

This model is part of Audi’s plan to electrify its entire model range, a plan which includes 20 new e-tron models by 2025. The PPE architecture has been made for Porsche and Audi full-size luxury models across both conventional cars and SUVs, and the platform can be adapted for various lengths and track widths. This will feature an 800V electrical system, and can takes 350 kW charging; this will be a sister car to the Taycan.

The EV-specific platform has been designed for a rear-mounted motor as standard with a second motor that can be accommodated to provide all-wheel drive, as on the J1 architecture of the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S launch models. The PPE platform will also accommodate features such as torque vectoring and rear-axle steering, both not featured on the VW Group’s MEB platform on which Audi is also developing new models.

Audi will commence production of its PPE-based model ‘early in the next decade’ and the Sportback model will be a showcase for the new architecture, made to cover the upper-medium size to luxury classes, the company said, the platform to be the basis for SUVs, Sportback models and station wagons. This will likely be pure EV versions of the A6 Avant, A7 Sportback, A8, Q7 and Q8, according to Autocar.

The forthcoming PPE-based models will be joined by models from the aforementioned J1 and MEB platforms, as well as from the modified MLB Evo platform on which the Audi e-tron and e-tron Sportback SUVs are based. Audi’s first MEB-based model is the Q4 e-tron, which is set to make its debut next year; the MEB also underpins the Volkswagen ID.3.
