Ferrari Roma – gorgeous new 620 PS coupé debuts

Ferrari has some of the most literal nameplates in the business – Pista, Speciale, Superfast – and its latest creation is simply called the Roma. Fitting, then, that the iconic Italian capital was used as the backdrop for the car’s unveiling yesterday.

The Roma marks a departure for the Prancing Horse. Rather than being an iteration of an existing model, it’s a brand new offering from the brand – a coupé with a front-mounted V8, instead of the classical 12 cylinders. Ferrari calls this a “2+”, which we assume to mean a two-seater with some space in the back for luggage.

And if the company is going to introduce a new model line, then this is definitely the way to do it, because the Roma is simply stunning. Whereas other recent Ferraris prioritise aerodynamic efficiency above all else, here you’ll find sleek, elegant lines that draw plenty of inspiration from Maranello’s illustrious back catalogue, as well as the Monza SP1 and SP2 speedsters.

The link to the last two cars is most evident at the front of the car, where you’ll find headlights that are divided using simple horizontal daytime running lights, flanking a bold reinterpretation of the usual big grille. The curves that emanate from this area flow voluptuously over the front wheels towards the clean flanks, which remain uninterrupted thanks to the flush door handles.

Behind the long bonnet, the low-slung roofline sweeps over the cabin and tapers towards the rear of the car, where the body once again flares outward to envelop the rear wheels. At the back, you find another departure from Ferrari tradition – flat instead of round quad tail lights, neatly integrated into the rear spoiler. A sizeable diffuser with quad tailpipes sits underneath.

This simple elegance continues inside, where twin cowls envelop the driver and passenger. Between these cowls, there’s a portrait-format centre touchscreen and the controls for the gearbox which, like the SF90 Stradale, are inspired by the company’s famed gated manual shifters of yore.

As is usual for Ferrari these days, the Roma is equipped with digital instrument displays for both the driver and passenger, as well as a Stradale-style steering wheel with a myriad of touch-sensitive controls for virtually every function of the car.

Power is derived from the F154 3.9 litre twin-turbocharged V8 from the Portofino convertible, here delivering 20 PS more at 620 PS from 5,750 to 7,500 rpm and 760 Nm of torque between 3,000 and 5,750 rpm. Drive is routed to the rear wheels via the Stradale’s new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With a dry weight of 1,472 kg – nearly 200 kg lighter than the folding-hardtop-equipped Portofino – the Roma will get from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds before blitzing past the 200 km/h mark in 9.3 seconds, on its way to a top speed quoted at over 320 km/h.

I doubt that. Ferrari has in the past produced cars like the Daytona and the 456GT- elegant FR layout coupe’s. Aston Martin can’t hold a candle to Ferrari.
