Power Up Tech mobile EV charging van now in Penang – 60 kW DC charger, RM1.70/kWh plus RM40 surcharge

It’s been a good long while since Power Up Tech was originally scheduled to enter Malaysia in the first quarter of the year, but the Singapore-based mobile electric vehicle charging service has finally arrived on our shores. The company held an official launch earlier this month, initially limiting its coverage to Penang Island.

Essentially, Power Up dispatches vans equipped with a 60 kW DC charger and a built-in battery to EVs that need charging. Users can make a booking via WhatsApp at 019-464 4314, although there are plans to introduce an app starting next month.

Currently, Power Up operates two Maxus eDeliver 3 vans through its local partner Nazamax, with plans to add more to the fleet if demand increases. The vans are equipped with either a 64 kWh or an 81 kWh battery, and which one gets dispatched depends on the battery of the EV that needs charging.

Pricing is understandably a bit on the high side at RM1.70 per kWh, and there’s also a RM40 service fee tacked on top of it. The good news is that the surcharge covers parking for the van up to RM5 if the EV happens to be in a paid parking lot. Keep in mind that the van will only charge the car up to a maximum of 80%, as anything beyond that will take significantly more time.

Given that charging can take up to an hour, Power Up Tech offers additional detailing services while you wait for your car to be topped up, including a car wash at RM20, tyre shine at RM10 and interior vacuuming at RM15. This lowers the surcharge to RM30.

Subscription packages are also available, depending on whether you need a charge twice, four times, six times or eight times a month. These packages include a set number of car washes and tyre shine services, lowers the cost of vacuuming to RM10 and eliminates the surcharge. Pricing of the packages will vary depending on the size of your car’s battery, ranging from RM172 to RM1,037 per month.

Power Up also has a partnership with Mercedes-Benz Malaysia (MBM), offering an MB Platinum 5 package at a special price for customers who purchase a Mercedes-Benz EQ EV. As the name suggests, this provides users with five charging services a month, as well as five car washes, tyre shine services and vacuuming services bundled in.

Although the service is currently limited to the island (a strategic decision, given the “significant” number of EVs there), a Power Up representative told us it will consider expanding to the mainland if there is sufficient demand for it. The company also intends to offer its services to Klang Valley by the end of the year, as well as in Johor Bahru later on.

Power Up appears to be the first mobile EV charging service to go live in Malaysia. Gentari previously showcased its EV Charge Go service last year with a much lower proposed surcharge and per-minute charging, but we haven’t heard anything since then.

    I have 1 question.
    1. What powers this mobile EV charger’s charger? Is it a small petrol engine( like those used in pasar malam) or does the charger have its own battery?

EV is a world wide scam to control the freedom oh humanity!
EV can be shut down with software controlled “kill switches”
