Welcome to the VIP lounge. The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are nameplates that need no introduction, being the carriages of choice for the upper echelons for easily two decades now. Here, Hafriz Shah deep dives into the latest-gen MPV duo in an attempt to answer the question: which should you go for?
Launched in Malaysia side-by-side exactly a year ago, the 2024 Toyota Vellfire is priced at RM438,000 while the 2024 Toyota Alphard asks for RM100k more at RM538,000, OTR without insurance. Underpinning them both is the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform in GA-K form.
The Vellfire carries over its 2AR-FE 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine and seven-virtual ratio Super CVT-i, but the Alphard says goodbye to its 3.5 litre NA V6, now using a 278 PS/430 Nm 2.4 litre turbo V6 and an eight-speed Direct Shift conventional auto.
Both models get 19-inch two-tone alloys (although the tyre brands differ between the Alphard and Vellfire), 12.3-inch digital instruments, a 14-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 15 JBL speakers, wireless phone charging and heated/ventilated front seats (adjustable eight ways for the driver, four ways for the passenger), amongst others.
What the Alphard has that the Vellfire doesn’t are electrostatic switches, shift paddles, wider VIP chairs (as provided by its Executive Lounge spec), a 14-inch flip-down roof screen and detachable phone-like controls for audio, climate, 64-colour roof lighting, seats, plus a table with vanity mirror and a relax-recline with massage function. Lots more in the video review, so give it a watch.

EV vs fossil oil burner. Air suspension vs spring. One piece chasis vs multi. 600 HP vs 180 HP. 4WD vs 2WD. List go on…
Vellfire first,
Alphard for Bos’s upgrade
It’s normal to see 2nd hand reconditioned alphard veilfire overstocked inside used car dealerships compounds
Those dealerships expect people to still be gullible enough to pay 200k+ for a 5 years old underpowered previous gen Vellfire 2.5
2.5 definitely underpowered for a casket of 100kg and a corpse of 70-80kg in it
Next 5 years block, these models going to lose market share to the incoming Chinese large MPV’s !
