Toyota has introduced a new version of the Yaris Ativ, known to you and me as the Toyota Vios, in Thailand. The Nightshade, as the name suggests, is essentially a black pack for the B-segment sedan, mirroring the modifications owners have doubtless already performed to their cars.

Based on the range-topping Premium Luxury variant and retailing at the same 699,000 baht (RM89,900), the Nightshade receives a gloss black finish on the roof and side mirrors, along with a black rear spoiler (not found on the Yaris Ativ in Thailand) and black chrome 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels. Just two colour options are available, these being Cement Grey and Platinum White Pearl.

The dark look can also be found on the inside with black quilted leather on the seats and the dashboard, replacing the usual maroon trim and featuring contrasting silver stitching. Otherwise, the Nightshade is identical to the regular Premium Luxury, with standard kit including full-LED headlights, keyless entry, push-button start, auto air-con with rear vents, a seven-inch digital instrument display, a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera system and six speakers.

Driver assistance systems also remain unchanged, so the Nightshade comes with autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane departure warning, front departure alert, pedal misapplication control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and auto high beam. Six airbags and stability control are also fitted as standard.

No changes to the mechanicals either, which still include a 3NR-VE 1.2 litre Dual VVT-i naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine that produces 94 PS at 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. By comparison, our Vios uses a larger 1.5 litre 2NR-VE mill that churns out 106 PS and 138 Nm. Drive is sent to the front wheels through a CVT, as usual.

Buyers who want more aggression to their car’s design can spec the Nightshade with the Lusso bodykit, consisting of a front splitter, side skirts and rear spats, all with black inlays. The kit costs 16,220 baht (RM2,090).

Their 1.2L able to churn out 3NR-VE 1.2 litre Dual VVT-i
94 PS at 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm of torque at 4,400 while our Perodua 1.3L Dual VVT-i managed 94 hp/121 Nm > guess we are short changed on the PS even with bigger engine capacity.

An extra 1 PS and 11 Nm seems reasonable for less than 100 cc of additional displacement.
