MBPJ aims to install 1,000 EV chargers at public parking sites, strategic locations in Petaling Jaya

The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) aims to install 1,000 EV chargers, in strategic locations and public parking spaces across Petaling Jaya in phases, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on June 26 between the city council, EV Connection (EVC) and Carput Zap Network.

The first phase will see the installation of 500 EV chargers which will be installed by the two appointed parties, EV Connection and Carput Zap Network. Meanwhile, MBPJ stated that the appointment of the two firms is aimed at setting up 100 EV charging locations by 2030, reported Sinar Harian.

These locations will potentially include government buildings, sports complexes, public parking spaces and other strategic locations throughout Petaling Jaya, according to the city council’s statement as sighted by the news outlet.

“Both strategic partners are committed to supporting MBPJ’s mission to transform Petaling Jaya into a sustainable and resilient city. MBPJ is deploying modern charging technology that meets safety standards, is user-friendly, and highly efficient — in line with the growing number of EV owners in the Klang Valley,” Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said in a statement.

The installation of EV chargers in Petaling Jaya is in line with the nation’s aspirations towards low-carbon mobility and green transformation, and MBPJ is committed to expanding access to EV charging infrastructure for the benefit of its local residents, Zahri said. “We hope this effort will further solidify Petaling Jaya’s position as a leader in green mobility, both locally and nationally,” said the mayor of Petaling Jaya.

Last April, Petaling Jaya saw the launch of public EV chargers in Plaza 33 by Schneider Electric Malaysia which offered a 180 kW DC fast charger and two 22 kW AC chargers, priced at RM1.60 per kWh for DC and RM1.00 per kWh for AC.
