JPJ considering making dashcams mandatory for public transport vehicles – only GPS compulsory now

JPJ is considering making dashcams mandatory in all public transport vehicles. According to the department’s assistant director of operations Mohd Alifarihan Abdullah, dashcams is a good idea and that current regulations only require public transport vehicles to be equipped with a GPS system.

“The licences and conditions for public vehicles are only GPS and is why having dashcams compulsory is a good idea but for now it’s only mandatory to have a GPS,” he said at the ‘Public Roads Don’t Belong to Bicycle Gangs’ forum in Pantai Dalam yesterday, reported by Malay Mail.

This suggestion surfaced after a recent viral video showed a Rapid KL MRT feeder bus driving close to a group of cyclists, which led to a confrontation between the bus driver and the cyclists. Police reports were made and there were subsequent lively discussions on cyclists’ presence and behaviour on the road.

Another recent development for buses was the government’s move to make the use of seat belts mandatory for express and tour bus drivers and passengers. It came after a bus accident that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students and injured 33 others.
