Over 80% of road accidents caused by driver behaviour rather than bad road conditions – Nanta

Over 80% of road accidents in Malaysia are caused by driver behaviour rather than poor road conditions, works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has said, according to a report by the Malay Mail.

“Based on Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) findings, out of more than 500,000 accident cases, there were 12,000 serious injuries and 6,000 deaths — 4,000 of them involving motorcyclists. Only around 12-13% are due to road factors, including damage and weather. In contrast, more than 80% are due to driver behaviour,” he said in a Mingguan Malaysia interview published yesterday.

“Unfortunately, many are still inclined to blame others and won’t admit their own mistakes. But this is the reality we must acknowledge,” he added, expressing concern that public perception tends to blame infrastructure failures whenever crashes occur, even if investigations show otherwise.

Nanta said more advocacy is needed to encourage safer driving habits, including not using mobile phones, obeying speed limits and avoiding distractions, and on the tragic Gerik bus crash that happened in June, the minister said that the transport ministry’s (MoT) investigations found that road conditions were not to blame.

“According to the official MoT report and the viral dashcam footage, the accident happened due to speeding. The speed limit in that area is 60 km/h, but the bus was travelling at 117 km/h, nearly double,” said Nanta.

The works ministry has been working on improving road monitoring and maintenance, but the focus must also be on changing mindsets and behaviours behind the wheel, he added.

If 80% accidents due to driver carelessness, then why authorities keep reducing the fines up to 80% ?
No wonder the accidents keep increasing.A rm300 compound will mean a whopping RM240 rebate..the moron only pay RM40!!!
So,in other words…u can afford to commit the same offense 7 times!!!

  • It’s definitely stressful being blamed for wrong,

That’s why we have Insurance and Premiums, Cctv, Signals, Dashcam, Blind Spot Monitor, VSC, AutoE. Brake, Autopilot Cruise to help reduce fatigue too. Eye fatigue also need to be helped by using UV Tinted or Sun Glass.

Lack of maintenance is considered as driver behaviour too?

If you guys care to visit any authorised B&P centres like Honda, Nissan, Proton and Toyota you would be surprised because there would be many cars with ABS, BA, EBD some with AEB and/or ACC (many also have proximity sensors or even 360 camera) but still involved in accident and i highly agrees a lot of car accident/collisions actually caused by driver error.

if all those that replied to this article saying they are not to be blamed, you guys are surely oblivious to the fact that in safety incidents or accidents, the undisputed fact is that 80% of the root cause is due to behaviour and 20% due to situations/conditions — don’t believe ? ask any safety experts in your company on this. and then again based on Pareto analysis of 80/20, emphasis is to tackle the 80% of the cause. so blame yourselves !

  • My suggestion is build even more humps at residential area. Build strong and high divider at the high risk road. Remove any object can hind the eyesight at exit of road such the illegal parking, stalls at road side near the exit.

Can the gomen admint that law enforcement is pathetic and there is no way we can get better driver attitude at this point without throwing the book at people? The whole book and not 50% of the book whenever PDRM and JPJ have discounts? Motorcyclists seem to ride with impunity. Traffic lights treated like give way signs, no lane filtering etiquette and just general dangerous riding? Public service vehicles driven like rally cars and highways treated like the Nurburgring?

Is it so hard to get enforcement officers to just do the job taxpayers are paying them for?

OK, even if i have to support this so call statement, there’s still 20% of it due to road issues. And maybe inside of the 80%, partially also happened due to the problem started from the 20%.
    1) Maybe the road is bumpy, the driver hard to control their car, so they have some bumpy habbit that eventually lead to them bumping into others butt

    2) Maybe the pothole here and there, make the driver so “pikchik” “annoy” that they take sudden divertion which also lead to accident

    3) Maybe the freaking traffic police, when there’s no jam, they suddenly do a road block or so call help in the traffic light to ease the traffic, end up gettin more jam. In the end, after driver survive this traffic police torture, they turn into Dominic Toretto and get into accident.

    and many more……
