Higher education institutions can have online classes during ASEAN Summit, avoid congestion – MoHE

The 47th ASEAN Summit that Kuala Lumpur will be hosting this week is set to be the largest meet of its kind organised by the regional block. Aside from leaders of ASEAN countries, world leaders headlined by US president Donald Trump will descend on KL for this edition.

Trump will be joined by Canadian PM Mark Carney, Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa, Cyprus president Nikos Christodoulides and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. Brazil and South Africa will become Sectoral Dialogue Partners to ASEAN while the two European countries are set to become ASEAN dialogue partners.

With KL city centre ‘on total lockdown’, as foreign minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan put it, plenty of roads closed and PDRM out in full force for security and traffic control, expect major congestion.

Higher education institutions can have online classes during ASEAN Summit, avoid congestion – MoHE

Now, the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) is allowing higher education institutions around the Klang Valley the option to conduct classes online during throughout the ASEAN Summit period. The ministry has asked higher education institutions – especially those located in KL, Selangor and Putrajaya – to look at the locations, time and dates of road closures for the summit.

MoHE says that the move is to ensure students are not affected by the road closures. “This facility is given to ensure the convenience of higher education institution members and it allows them to plan their journeys, and ensure that the learning process goes smoothly,” MoHE said in a statement, reported by Astro Awani.

Earlier, the Public Service Department (JPA) announced that it will allow civil servants to work from home over the ASEAN Summit period to reduce traffic congestion. Also, around 70 schools will shift to online classes for the same reason.
