2023 C28 Nissan Serena on display – 2.0L NA and e-Power EV; already spied in Malaysia, launching soon?

This is the sixth-generation (C28) Nissan Serena, which made its global debut in November last year and is currently being showcased at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show. Pictured here is the welcab version of the MPV, specifically one that is designed with a deployable ramp at the rear of the vehicle for easy wheelchair access.

As you can see, the wheelchair occupies the third row when the seats are folded away to the side of the cabin, which is one of the configurations that Nissan offers. By removing more seats, two wheelchairs or one large wheelchair can also be fitted, providing customers with more options when transporting individuals who are confined to a wheelchair.

This is just one of several welfare-focused variants of the Serena that are sold in Japan, with other available features being retractable side steps, slide-up seats, an electric lifter (for larger wheelchairs) and additional grab handles placed throughout the cabin.

All this flexibility is made possible thanks to the spacious interior, which is packaged into an MPV that differs slightly in terms of size compared to its predecessor. The latest Serena measures between 4,690 and 4,765 mm long, between 1,695 and 1,715 mm wide, between 1,870 and 1,885 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,870 mm.

Meanwhile, the fifth-generation (C27) model is between 4,685 and 4,770 mm long, between 1,695 and 1,740 mm wide, 1,865 mm tall and its wheelbase spans 2,860 mm. One reason why the Serena hasn’t grown bigger is because it needs to meet the size constraints of standard automated parking systems in Japan (5,000 mm length and 1,850 mm width limit).

Design-wise, the latest Serena appears to be an evolution of its predecessor, with notable design cues being a more modern take on the brand’s signature V-motion grille, which seamlessly blends into the multi-tier headlamps.

The general profile of the MPV remains familiar, albeit with more pronounced lines on the sides, while the rear sees narrower taillights that are now separated from the reflectors – these hug the corners of the vehicle.

The interior overhaul is more substantial, as there’s now a digital instrument cluster that replaces the screens packed into a binnacle placed far up the cabin in the previous model. The new screen ahead of the driver is visually connected to the touchscreen infotainment system that is now more upright.

Other changes include more discreet air vents, with those in the middle tucked between the central touchscreen and a raised panel. The latter is smaller to provide more space to slide between the front seats, while also housing lit-when-on climate controls and gear selector buttons – no more shift lever.

The Serena in Japan also gets ProPilot (autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance steering assist) as standard, with higher grades getting ProPilot 2.0 that adds hands-free driving, ProPilot Remote Park and ProPilot Park with memory function.

In Japan, the Serena is offered with two powertrains, the first featuring a MR20DD 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine that outputs 150 PS (148 hp or 110 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. This is paired with an Xtronic CVT and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

The second option is Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system, where a HR14DDe 1.4 litre inline-three petrol rated at 98 PS (97 hp or 72 kW) and 123 Nm acts as a generator to charge a lithium-ion battery, which then powers a front-mounted EM57 electric motor with 163 PS (161 hp or 120 kW) and 315 Nm.

The C28 is expected to be launched in Malaysia, as a camouflaged unit was sighted near Genting Highlands back in March this year. However, there’s no word on when the all-new MPV will go on sale here, but based on what you see so far, are you looking forward to it?

2023 Nissan Serena spotted testing in Malaysia – all-new C28 MPV features bolder styling; launch soon?

The sixth-generation Nissan Serena made its global debut last November and has now been spotted in Malaysia undergoing testing. For now, there has been no indication from Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) on when the all-new C28 will be launched here.

This lightly-camouflaged example was spotted by paultan.org reader Makinen Goh near Genting Highlands, with the giveaway cues being the angular taillights that terminate near the sliding door rails as well as the positioning of the reflectors further below.

Other design changes on the C28 include a redesigned tailgate that has a cleaner appearance with a glass section that incorporates the latest Nissan logo and model script. Elsewhere, the general boxy shape of the new three-row people mover doesn’t differ too significantly from its predecessor, with the upswept beltline leading to the D-pillar making a return.

However, the front is more distinctive and represents a big evolution from the C27. Now sporting an X-shaped face, the two-tier lighting arrangement of old has been abandoned in favour of integrating the LED running lights and headlamps into corners of the upper grille.

The overhaul on the inside sees the fitment of a horizontally sculptured dashboard that looks simpler and more modern. There’s now a digital instrument cluster directly ahead of the driver, while a touchscreen infotainment system resides just beside.

Below the latter, you’ll find new controls for the climate system and button-type gear selector instead of a traditional lever. This gives a better sense of spaciousness, which is something the Serena already had plenty of to begin with.

In Japan, the Serena is offered with two powertrains, with the first being a MR20DD 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol that serves up 150 PS and 200 Nm of torque. This is paired with an Xtronic CVT to drive the front wheels, although there’s also the option of all-wheel drive.

The second option is Nissan’s e-Power system that features a HR14DDe 1.4 litre NA three-cylinder acting purely as a generator for a lithium-ion battery, which then powers a front-mounted electric motor rated at 163 PS (120 kW) and 315 Nm.

The current Serena here uses the MR20DD with a mild hybrid system that includes a small electric motor making 2.6 PS (1.8 kW) and marketed as the S-Hybrid. It’s likely this setup will be brought back for the C28, but we’ll have to wait and see for official word from ETCM. Looking forward to the all-new Serena?

  • 2023 C28 Nissan Serena – 1.4L e-Power hybrid with 163 PS & 315 Nm, flagship Luxion variant, Pro-Pilot 2.0

    2023 C28 Nissan Serena – 1.4L e-Power hybrid with 163 PS & 315 Nm, flagship Luxion variant, Pro-Pilot 2.0

Nissan has launched the all-new Serena in Japan with sales of the purely petrol-powered models starting this winter followed by e-Power hybrid models next year. Prices range between 2.7 million yen (RM87k) to 3.2 million yen (RM104k) for the purely petrol-powered models. As for the e-Power hybrid versions, prices range between 3.1 million yen (RM100k) to 4.7 million yen (RM152k) for the new, high-end Luxion variant.

The purely petrol-powered models are fitted with a 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine with 150 PS and 200 Nm of torque. There are 2WD and 4WD options for the purely petrol-powered Serena with power transferred to the wheels via a Xtronic CVT gearbox.

On the other hand, the e-Power hybrid variants of the all-new Serena are powered by a new 1.4 litre engine paired with an electric motor to produce a combined 163 PS (120 kW) and 315 Nm of torque. According to Nissan, the new powertrain delivers more power and smoother acceleration with reduced engine noise. The e-Power models also get the e-Pedal Step feature to maneuvers the vehicle using just the accelerator.

Basically the e-Power system uses the electric motor to move the car, with the small engine only functioning as an electricity generator.

In terms of dimensions, depending on the variants, the all-new Serena measures between 4,690 mm and 4,765 mm in length, between 1,695 mm to 1,715 mm in width and between 1,870 mm to 1,885 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,870 mm. The current Serena measures 4,770 mm in length, 1,740 mm in width and 1,865 mm in height, with a 2,860 mm wheelbase.

All variants of the new Serena are fitted with 16-inch wheels and LED lighting all round along with hands-free powered passenger doors on both sides. An Autech kit is also offered with the all-new Serena with a more prominent front grille design, along with sportier bumpers and wheel design. Nissan said the vehicle’s structure has been optimised to deflect crosswinds and improve stability at high speeds.

On that note, the new Serena was also built with the aim to reduce motion sickness and this is done by offering firmer suspension for smoother vehicle movement and improved stability while a new seat design serves to better accommodate passenger movements while on the move.

The highlight of the all-new Serena’s cabin is the switch-type gear selector along with the widest windshield in the minivan category for improved visibility. Standard features include an electronic parking brake, a seven-inch infotainment display, USB-A and USB-C charging ports, dual-zone air-conditioning and six speakers.

The all-new Serena boasts the most spacious cabin in the minivan category with 120 mm additional rear legroom compared to its predecessor. Additionally, the e-Power models can be specified with a 100V AC power source to power external electronic devices.

As mentioned above, with the all-new Serena also debuts the new Luxion variant that sits above the Highway Star variant. Exclusive features in the Luxion variant include a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display, wireless charging, a head-up display and the ProPilot 2.0 advanced driver assistance system which enables hands-free driving at speeds of over 40 km/h. The other variants are fitted with the standard ProPilot system. Only the Luxion variant comes with a seven-seater layout while the rest are designed to accomodate eight occupants.

Standard ProPilot features include autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, collision avoidance steering assist and adaptive cruise control to name a few. The ProPilot 2.0 system adds ProPilot Park with memory function and ProPilot Remote Park.

When in operation, ProPilot 2.0 also works hand-in-hand with the NissanConnect Navigation system to automatically alter the vehicle’s acceleration, braking and even steering operations based on speed signs and map information for smoother operations.

C28 Nissan Serena patent images show next-gen face

Here are patent images of the next-generation Nissan Serena, which show a familiar shape with a new face. The C28 MPV will also have differences to the current C27 facelift at the rear, and some blink-and-miss changes on the profile. We’ll elaborate.

The current Serena is the C27, a facelifted fifth-generation model that was first unveiled in August 2019. The C28 is expected to be an all-new sixth-generation model of a boxy mid-size MPV designed primarily for Japan. Malaysia is one of the few countries officially selling the Serena, and with local assembly by Tan Chong too – domestic rivals such as the Toyota Noah/Voxy and Honda Stepwgn never made it here officially. The C27 was launched here in July 2022.

The C28 has an fresh face that won’t be mistaken for the current car. It wears a one-piece mask with the headlamps integrated into the grille, pretty much like how Hyundai likes to hide its headlamps, although it’s just simple horizontal slats here. The headlamps are visually connected to the A pillars; the C27’s tall headlamps – which cut deep into the bonnet – are not.

This new grille is reminiscent of the one seen on the Nissan Chill-Out from November 2021, a concept car that previews a sub-Ariya electric SUV. The rest of the face features a simple lower grille and vertical elements on the edges of the bumper. It’s a simpler, more streamlined look compared to the current van.

There are less changes at the rear, but it’s the same story – more simple. The current Serena has a rather busy look with two bars of chrome, but there’s just one now that neatly bridges the bottom of the vertical tail lamps. The lights themselves are slimmer with no wrap-around, and the LED elements have no curves. Two small vertical reflectors sit below the lights. That’s it.

Last but not least, the side profile, which looks 100% similar to the C27 at a glance. Certainly, the glass area – with front quarter windows that go very low, and a stepped rear – is the same, but while the C27 has a wavy character line from the headlamps to the sliding door ledge, the C28 gets a straight line. Again, more straightforward.

What do you think of the next-gen C28 Serena based on these patent images? Do you prefer its more simple face and lines or the more adorned current C27 with its imposing front grille and flashy rear elements?
