New Ford Ranger facelift now in Malaysia!

Ford Ranger

First unveiled as the Ranger MAX Concept at the Thai Motor Expo in November last year, the new Ford Ranger facelift is now on sale in Malaysia as a CBU import from its regional production center in Rayong, Thailand.

The Ranger’s 2.5 litre Duratorq turbodiesel engine with lag-free VGT puts out 143 PS and 330Nm of torque, mated to either a 5-speed manual (RM83,888 Peninsular and RM86,388 East Malaysia) or a 5-speed automatic transmission (RM88,888 Peninsular and RM92,388 East Malaysia). if you buy it now you can get a free accessory package worth RM2,000 while stocks last.

Ford seems to have abandoned its “a truck should look like a truck” stand that it took when it first launched this edition of the Ranger, as the new facelift now has alot more curves that was previously reserved for the Mazda Fighter. Much of the front is new, with new headlamps and new fender panels etc but most of the rear remains the same. The new look was designed by a team based in Melbourne.

Ford Ranger

On the interior there are 2 airbags, and an AM/FM and MP3-capable CD changer with AUX input. There are various conveniences in the interior such as a slide-out tray that can support up to 10kg and a two-level arm rest storage area. The rear bed has dimensions of 1,530mm by 1,456mm.

As for off-road capability, Ford claims a 34 degree approach angle and a 33 degree departure angle, with an underside that is said to be well armoured. The rear suspension uses leaf springs with oversized 32mm gas shocks, while the front uses a double wishbone with torsion bar spring design. The fuel tank, transfer case, engine and transmission are protected by steel plating.

There is a low-range gearing reduction of 2.48:1 for the auto and 2.02:1 for the manual. The rear differential is a torque-sensing multiple LSD to help split torque balance optimally between the left and right rear wheels whenever the situation calls for it.

Kia Koup Preview Drive at Namyang R&D Centre!

Kia Koup

A few members of the Malaysian media got to drive the Kia Koup today. Yes, the production model that was just unveiled less than a month ago – I believe our congregation is the first in the world to get to try Kia’s latest 2-door coupe out.

I believe the Kia Forte marks a significant milestone in the history of Kia models. For the first time (at least for me) in a long time a Kia model looks bloody good enough for a thought to spark in my head that it would be nice to see one parked in my garage, something appealing for me to look at when I step out of the house every morning, and not just something that I tell myself I bought because it was merely cheaper.

The Koup in particular is also Kia’s first two-door coupe, while its Korean sibling Hyundai has gone down that road many times even a long time ago with the Scoupe.

Kia Koup

The Forte and Forte Koup’s design and details are pleasant to look at, without anything garish or shocking, with the only thing that stands out being the rather aggressive front bumpers. In fact at first glance the Forte Koup looks pretty much like just a 2-door Forte but the Koup actually only shares the engine bay hood with the Forte, with every other panel unique, for example the front fenders may look the same but the Koup’s are actually more aggressive and seem to bulge out more to cover the front wheels.

In the US, it goes head to head against the Honda Civic Coupe (which it looks kinda similiar to), the Scion tC, the Chevy Cobalt Coupe and the aging Ford Focus Coupe. The chassis uses MacPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the back.

Kia Koup

We had two units of the Kia Forte Koup to try out, both automatic models, one with a 2.0 litre engine and the other with a 2.4 litre engine. The 2.0 litre engine produces 156 horsepower and 195Nm of torque mated to a 4-speed auto transmission while the 2.4 litre model puts out 173 horses and 227Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed auto. Both models had pre-production interior panels without any texture but the dash looked finished.

The Kia Forte Koup has a decent seating position with the driver’s chair able to go far back enough for a comfortable driving position for me, however with my seat pushed far back rear legroom was compromised, but that was better when a shorter Korean engineer took the driver’s helm with me sitting at the back. The steering has both rake and reach adjustability which means I was able to adjust the steering wheel to be close enough to me for an optimum driving position, which means the base of my hand was able to rest on the top of the steering wheel.

Kia Koup

And off we go. Our test drive was not on public road but in Kia’s Namyang R&D center, where there was a very long and wide multi-lane straight where we could drive down, do some low and high speed lane change maneuvers, and U turn at the end in whatever fashion you’d like, whether a regular smooth turn or a crazy one if you can make yourself do so in front of the Kia Motors engineer in the car.

First up was the 2.0 litre. It is from the Theta II engine family but with CVVT only on the intake, unlike the new Optima facelift’s dual CVVT on the intake and exhaust. 156 horses felt quite spritely, which was expected really as it felt decent in the Optima so it should do better in the lighter Forte, and do better it did. Gearshifts are smooth and response to kickdown was quick and satisfactory, and so was the manual shifting with the gear lever. There is no Sport or S mode on the gearbox, you can either go into D or into manual mode. Push forward for upshift and pull back for downshift – I would have preferred it the other way around really as it feels more natural.

Kia Koup

The 2.4 litre was pretty powerful though like the 2.0 it didn’t sound particularly exciting, which is something every inline-4 engine faces. In stock form it just buzzes all the way to the redline without any rumble or grunt like a V6 or V8, and not even silky smooth like an inline-6. 173 horses and 227Nm of torque is nearly as much as the MINI Cooper S actually, so flooring it from gear 1 on the automatic did cause some protest from the tyres, though the engine is either 1) not powerful enough to cause any kind of torque steer or 2) Kia managed to sort out the driveshaft length and front suspension right.

Our cars were equipped with Kia’s MDPS or Motor-Driven Power Steering. This is an EPS system much like in the Civic, which uses an electric motor to drive the steering instead of it being directly hydraulically driven. This allows variable steering assistance – heavy at high speeds but lighter at low speeds to assist with parking. But I found that Kia hasn’t really got the speed, angle and assistance levels mapped out perfectly yet – it does not feel very smooth and natural and sometimes it switches from heavy to light when you don’t feel like it should.

Kia Koup

At low speeds, some maneuvers that did not require much of steering angle still resulted in a heavy steering – it’s only when you turn more that assistance increases. But other than that it felt like a proper hydraulic system with nicely weighted self-centering and etc, which is okay for a first time attempt at EPS but a second generation improved version should be worked on immediately! We may not get the EPS at all of course, because Kia engineers say a traditional hydraulic power steering is also an option with the car so it depends what the Malaysian distributor orders.

The Forte Koup has a slightly firmer suspension than the Forte sedan, with reduced ride height too. A sharp turn produced in no awkward reaction from the chassis, there was some body roll in protest to the sudden maneuver but there was no awkward bouncyness or etc so that’s decent.

So yeah, it’s quite a nice 2-door coupe actually and from what I hear our local Kia distributors are looking into bringing both the Forte sedan and Forte Koup in, with 1.6 from the sedan and 2.0 for the coupe. I reckon the 2-door coupe as a CBU unit could be priced at around the Honda Civic or Hyundai Coupe’s level, matching the two cars as a 2.0 litre automatic C-segment vehicle but I think Naza Kia would have to load up the car with nice specs such as a sunroof to get around the badge snobbery.

Kia Koup

Rear legroom especially the seat behind the driver’s seat varies depending on how far the driver’s seat is pushed back, but headroom is sufficient for someone 183cm tall like me, as there was still a 2 to 3 finger gap or so between my head and the ceiling, so its perfectly capable of being a 4 or 5 seater, though 5 may be abit of a squeeze especially since the rear floor is not flat.

Other things nice to have but absent on the Koup are a slightly thicker steering wheel rim for a nicer grip and paddle shifts for the automatic.

I can’t wait to get the Koup down on some real roads to see how it really drives like because it looks good (looks are subjective of course, how many of you agree with me?) but as a coupe that looks like it has some pretty sporty intentions, how fun the drive is will be very important to maybe half the customer base out there, with the other half likely to buy it purely based on its looks. From initial findings it definitely drives better than the rather softly setup Hyundai Elantra which it shares a chassis and alot of parts with, except the engine where the Kia uses a newer, better and more modern family.

Aston Martin One-77 voted for design award!

Aston Martin One-77

The semi-mysterious Aston Martin One-77 has finally been unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza in Italy, where it won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes, which was decided by public voting among the attendees of the show. The One-77 garnered 30% of total votes.

“Embodying everything Aston Martin stands for; the One-77 has proven itself as the most desirable automotive art form at its premiere today. We have achieved a new level of design and craftsmanship which has been clearly recognised by the public here in the homeland of design at Villa d’Este,” said Dr Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin’s CEO.

The One-77 is one of the most aggressive-looking Astons to date, and features a 7.3 litre normally aspirated V12 engine that puts out over 700 horses which is plenty for a car that is said to weigh only about 1,500kg – that’s just a couple of more tens of kgs more than the Proton Exora.

VIDEO: Kia Koup presentation at NYIAS 2009

Kia Forte Koup

Here’s the launch presentation of the new Kia Forte Koup at the 2009 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) earlier this month, just one year after the Koup Concept was unveiled at the 2007 edition of the same show. The Koup is the 2-door coupe version of the Kia Forte (also known as the Cerato and Spectra in different markets).

In the presentation video (which Kia injected a little humour into… did you know the Kia Soul was based on a boar?) we are also introduced to Kurt Kahl, a senior designer at Kia and the man responsible for the design of the new Kia Forte (under the guidance of Peter Schreyer of course), so if you like how the Forte and/or the Forte Koup looks you should check the video out after the jump.

Geely GE shamelessly apes the Phantom

Geely GE

Everytime Chinese automakers begin to show that they’ve moving one step ahead towards being able to produce advanced and most importantly SAFE cars, things like this destroy all that goodwill and return them to rip-off death trap status.

This is the Geely GE, which at first impression is obviously a rip-off of a Rolls-Royce. Geely denies this of course, saying that while it shares some similiarities it is “original” because while it looks similiar, the details are different enough to be called something new. The 5.4 meter long car has a 3.5 litre V6 engine under its hood.

Geely GE

The Geely GE (GE = Geely Excellence) shown here is a concept car but it must be for the truly antisocial high class Chinese customer as when you peek into the rear passenger cabin there is only one seat, somewhat like a little throne in the car. Only 3 seats in such a large thing – one driver and perhaps a bodyguard at the front and the boss at the back. The production version will be sold under a new brand called YingLun, which is meant to sound like England.

Rolls-Royce Asia Pacific is contemplating legal action, but we don’t know of any further action yet as of publishing time. But what they did say is that despite imitation being the best kind of flattery, they definitely are not flattered.

Look after the jump for more angles of the Geely GE.

U.S pricing for BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M leaks out

Recently, the latest additions to the M GmbH family, both the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M were officially released, allowing BMW to venture into the high performance, high ground clearance vehicle segment, a segment which was, till now, dominated by the Porsche Cayenne. According to BimmerFile, it now has the juicy pricing details for both the twin-turbo SUV’s.

The slightly modest looking BMW X5 M can be fetched for US$ 85,400, while the ‘coupe-ish’ X6 M carries a US$ 88,900 price tag (yes, only US$ 3,000 difference). The above mentioned prices should be for the base-line models, as you can expect them to hike up a little as you add more ticks on the options list.

Both all wheel drive performance SUV’s are powered by the M TwinPower Turbo engine, which is a 4.4 litre twin turbo V8 that is able to crank out 555HP between 5,750rpm to 6,000rpm and 680Nm of torque between 1,500rpm to 5,650rpm. Both cars can sprint to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, all the way up to a governed top speed of 250 km/h.

Mercedes Benz may pull out of Formula 1?

The latest addition to the hot rumor pot is the possibility of Stuttgart-based auto maker Mercedes Benz pulling out of Formula 1 as the recent “lie-gate” scandal involving the McLaren Formula 1 team intensifies. Apparently, Daimler AG’s CEO, Dieter Zetsche has revealed to a German-based publication that, “If circumstances should change, perhaps because of an unreasonable punishment by the FIA, it is possible that we could consider our engagement,”.

In a couple of days, the World Motor Sport Council will meet and a decision will be issued out regarding the scandal that involves the McLaren outfit not being truthful regarding the yellow flag incident at the 2009 season opener in Melbourne, Australia.

The Woking-based outfit is expected to face severe penalties, and it does make sense for Mercedes to think about pulling out if it feels that the FIA’s decision is unreasonable. The premium brand is not only supplying its V8 powerplants to McLaren, but to two other teams as well, including the slower Force India and Brawn GP.

MITI to rethink Approved Permit system

There was a report in Bernama today quoting Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir that the AP systems may be rethinked or abolished altogether.

It appears that this statement was prompted by a request by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association to open up the AP system to everyone, with maybe a 30% quota for Bumiputras and the rest to anyone by an open auction system.

Details are a little sketchy on whether this 30% quote for Bumis would have to be paid for or not, as in the current system APs are given free.

Don’t hope too much for car importing to be available to anyone at no cost however, as Datuk Mukhriz says abolition was not the only option on the table, and it is likely not to be the path taken as currently consumers are already paying for APs, and simply replacing it with an auction system would give the government extra revenue.

When an auction system was suggested back in 2007, MITI’s response was “auctioning can jeopardize the business of Bumiputra entrepreneurs in the automotive sector as it will be difficult to plan ahead and make long term investments.”

Buick Business MPV Concept built for China

Buick Business MPV

The Buick brand is possibly GM’s most successful brand out of the US and it’s quite big in China. The Buick GL8 was the 2nd most highest selling MPV in 2008 in China, selling 36,252 units second to the JAC Refine’s 36,304 units.

Here comes the Buick Business MPV Concept, which was designed and engineered by GM’s Pan Asian Technical Automotive Center. It’s designed to appeal to the upper class Chinese customer and styling-wise it looks like a larger version of the Opel Meriva concept showcased late year – you should be able to immediately recognise it by the shoulderline profile which takes a little dip in the middle before rising back up. Perhaps this is a “Grand Meriva”.

Buick Business MPV

There is no B-pillar and the rear doors slide rearward to offer full easy access to the interior, which features 6 individual seats that look rather comfortable. The middle row can be rotated to face the rear for easy meetings between 4 people, and there is even a table in the middle which you can use to place your notebook or something.

Audi to celebrate 100th birthday with new model

Audi A7

It seems that Audi will be unveiling a new model to celebrate its 100th birthday on the 16th of July 2009. There has been completely no details released on this model, and it’s probably not likely to be some of the other more “normal” cars that Audi are scheduled to release either, with the new Q3 being one.

The fact that the Q3 is only scheduled for a 2011 production start makes it a little too early to showcase it this year, perhaps only next year. What else could it be? A new Audi A7 (previewed in concept form as the 2009 Audi Sportback Concept) would definitely be a feast for the eyes, but there’s over 2 months to go so we’ll watch out for any other indicators coming in the future.
