Officials details on new BMW 1-Series Coupe

BMW_UK_1_Coupe.jpgBMW UK has put up an official announcement of the latest body variant of the BMW 1-Series – the new 1-Series coupe. In the UK, it will come with three engine options – the 120d, 123d and 135i, which means all of the more mainstream 1-Series coupe engines will be diesel engines except for the top of the line performance one.

The BMW 123d is the first car to receive BMW’s new 4-cylinder 2.0 litre twin turbodiesel engine announced earlier, making 204 horsepower and 400Nm of torque, enough to push the BMW 123d Coupe to 100km/h in 7 seconds. The 120d runs a sedate but sufficiently powerful 2.0 litre single turbo engine, making 177 horsepower and 350Nm of torque, good for a 7.6 second 0-100km/h run. The top of the line will be the first 1-Series to receive BMW’s potent 3.0 litre twin turbodiesel gasoline engine with 306 horsepower and 400Nm of torque, and it will go from 0 to 100km/h in 5.3 seconds.

BMW UK’s news page on the 1-Series Coupe shows a clear side 3/4 view of the car, so how the rear of the car looks like undisguised remains a mystery for now.

i love the concept of this car and i agree with some bmw enthusiasts that the current 3 is just too fat. the 1 coupe reminds of the 2002, e21 and e30 where the concept was for a small lightweight, fantastic driver's car at reasonable money. hope the 1 coupe can be at a reasonable price and better still if they have the 116i engine in it. diesel is fine but not here where the hopeless quality will kill the engine. heard that the cdi engines and bmw's diesels are suffering here. anyone can comment on the performance, lifespan and serviceability of bmw diesel engines? are they suffering due to the fuel quality?

don't think there'll be lotsa space if the design of the hatch is anything to go by. afterall, the original 2002, e21 and e30 also had crap space at the rear. but they were fantastic drivers' cars. ppl those days bought the cars for the driving pleasure. that's why bmw were even confident enough to call their cars the ultimate driving machines. this highlighted their singlemindedness in producing cars that could not only look good but were also good to drive… at a reasonable price (at that timelah).

" Flame-Surfacing" – Chris Bangle terminology for the convex/concave panels. Not "dented lookalike"

This will make the E30 a legend and a mod icon. People will look at it with gasps of what it was. BMW wants to grow with the generation that loved them and shows no effort in attracting the new generation.

I should be a hoot to drive. Small compact, relatively lightweight RWD.

I like how it resembles the E30, E36 in spirit and a miniturized E46 pysically.

Toss out all the electronic aids that plagues the E90 where driving fun is concerned, lighten it a bit ala E36 M3 LW, and this will make a good weekend track/fun car.

Might be popular with european countries. Here, the price is too steep considering other alternatives

I bought a 116i as I wanted a manual. It is such a nice car to drive. But, I do wish for more power.Yes, it reminds me of the old 2002 ( yes, I am that old !, but I could not afford one then ) I think a 120d is good enough for most people for everyday use. Hope BMW Malaysia will bring them in. 3 series is kind of over grown ?
