Chery and Fiat in talks

smallfiatlogo.jpgChery Automobile’s latest ally to be in the automotive industry might just be Fiat. Fiat has an existing alliance with a Chinese auto manufacturer – Nanjing Automobile Group, but that partnership has been far from profitable so far. One option being discussed would be Chery making cars using Fiat technologies and selling them.

That sounds wonderful, give Chery access to your technology Fiat, and perhaps the next Chery QQ will look like a Fiat Punto.

I would imagine with this partnership Cherry is equivalent to Naza for China. Badge engineering had become a good business these days.

i think the people who discount the china car makers today will be the ones who are dreaming. Volume is something that china has, and everyone wants a piece of it.

    honda_driver said,

China doesn't have the technology and working with Fiat and Proton just won't help them and v/versa. This is more like a desperate move for Fiat.

china has more than 100 car companies. fiat and proton are just 2 car companies that you have mentioned working with some of them.

are you also saying china will not be an automotive powerhouse in the coming years?

Nope. They might in the next decade. Btw, 100 or 200 or 300 doesn't represent the technology. Look at India, they are quite similar to China. Huge market but they just can't afford the technology. They can import but can't implement smoothly. One of the factor – skillfull workers like we have here in Malaysia.

To enter the huge Chinese market, you need a local partner and your local partner must be allowed some sort of TOT.
