MG Icon SUV concept – inspired by the brand’s past glories

UPDATE: Gallery now has pictures from the show.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later. MG, the company that brought us the iconic MG Roadster so long ago, has unveiled a concept car at the Beijing Motor Show. It’s no roadster nor a hot hatch but an SUV, the first for the car company.

This SUV concept is called the MG Icon and is created by the MG global design team headed by British director Anthony Williams-Kenny. Although one of the watermarks in the picture credits SAIC Design for the effort, both are essentially one and the same.

MG Icon SUV concept – inspired by the brand’s past glories

The inspiration for the MG Icon comes from their old design books, particularly the MGA and the MGB GT. Especially at the rear where the Icon’s rear structural lamps take position on top of the haunched wings. Inside, the Icon sports a four ‘shell’ seat layout, in which the rear seats can fold flat to the floor like every respectable SUV can.

Williams-Kenny said that the MG Icon highlights the car company’s global vision and is a milestone for the brand, particularly this year when MG is celebrating their 50 years in existence. No news whether MG will put the Icon into production.
