Hyundai i10 01

Hyundai has revealed the first images of its second-generation i10 compact and has also taken the wraps off its Grand i10 version in India. Let’s start with the Euro debutant – which was caught in spyshots back in May – first.

The A-segment hatch – designed and developed at the company’s European technical centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany – is due to make its official debut in Frankfurt next month, and sits on a new platform that’s five millimetres longer than the existing one.

The European-spec’d version is 80 mm longer, 65 mm wider and 50 mm lower than the current first-gen. Aside from these dimensional changes, the trunk capacity has also been upped by 10% to 252 litres, while the ride of the new car has been tuned to offer better handling and improved driving dynamics.

The standard equipment list will include vehicle stability control and front curtain airbags, while automatic climate control, a heated leather steering wheel and cruise control with speed limiter will be available for the car.The European i10 will be made at the company’s Turkish factory in Ízmit, with production set to begin in September.

As for the Grand i10, this is a stretched version of the car, being 100 mm longer than the European model, but sharing pretty much the same face. Essentially, this is very much an Indian market offering, not quite replacing the i10, which will continue to sell, but rather slotting in between the latter and the i20.

For India, two engine choices are available – buyers will be able to pick from an all-new 1.1 litre three-cylinder diesel or a 1.2 litre Kappa four-cylinder petrol unit, paired with a manual box or four-speed auto transmission.

In its highest trim specification level, the Grand i10 will come equipped with items such as dual airbags, rear air-conditioning vents, parking sensors and a two-DIN audio head unit with 1GB of internal memory as well as a cooled glove box.
