Renault Kwid unveiled – new A-segment crossover

renault-kwid 1656

This is the Renault Kwid, an A-segment crossover that will be sold globally, and which we previously thought would be called the Renault Kayou. Previewed by the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo’s winged concept (yes, the one with the ‘Flying Companion’!), the model rides on Renault-Nissan’s CMF-A platform.

Measuring 3,680 mm long and 1,580 mm wide, it’s 40 mm longer and 40 mm narrower than a Perodua Axia, while its 180 mm ground clearance trumps the Honda HR-V. Inside, you’ll find a seven-inch touch-screen and a digital instrument panel. Renault says the Kwid has the biggest cabin and boot in its class.

Under the bonnet sits a 0.8 litre engine that’s connected to a five-speed manual gearbox, making the vehicle “extremely well positioned in terms of fuel consumption.”

According to Autocar UK, the Renault Kwid is set to launch in India in the second half of the year, priced between 300k and 400k rupees (RM17k-23k). Although India will be its most important market, emerging markets such as Russia, Brazil and China could get it as well. No official word so far if Europe will get a budget Dacia version.

40 mm narrower than a Perodua Axia? Hmm… I think they should stop minimizing the suv -> crossover… it will look nice by itself in the showroom but once it’s on the road you can’t help but feel it’s a little bit… minimixed… unless of course the price of RM17k-23k remains… then it’s ok.

It’s tall, and it’s even narrower than an Axia? That does not sound good! Remember the Pajero? What would happen to THIS car?

Made for India? Do not want. I don’t care if it’s Renault, but if it’s made for India, it’ll end up like Datsun, Suzuki, VW, etc; all end up being death traps.

    Dayum, not too bad.

Though, I’d gladly trade touch screen for revmeter.

Agreed. They did quite a lot with very little, the interior looks quite nice, exterior too (though the door handles look melted…). The instrument cluster is nice too, but no rev meter is stupid, and unnecessary. How much can that cost? I’m sure the ECU records that data anyway, so all that is missing is a display for that. If this were a car only sold as an auto, ok, but this is going to be a manual car. A rev meter helps people save fuel and drive properly when they drive a manual.

    A-segment Kwid
    B-segment Captur
    C-segment Kadjar (previous call Koleos)
D-segment unknown name (perhaps call Kaching??!)

They still make the Koleos, even though it is not exactly D segment… but it is larger than the Kadjar, and placed above it. I suppose it is also more offroad capable, being a reskinned X-Trail.

Looks like Dacia Duster on steroids. Better take HRV.

This is more like a miniaturized Duster, or a Sandero on steroids.

Ha..ha…this will be thin, long & tall looking. Good for India’s narrow lanes. Over here in the wide highway, it will look like its just being sandwiched from both sides.

  • Expected British pound jokes.

“Say m8, wot are you driving these days.”

    “A Kwid.”

“A quid? Wot, you ride the bus?”

“No, a Renault Kwid. It’s a tiny crossover thing.”

    “Oh….. Did it cost a quid? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)”

0.8 litre engine. Imagine how shaky this car goes above 100km/h.

    Boot is 300 litre….thats impressive…

but malaysians should hold on to their horses…
this car has only a single wiper
    no isofix
    no airbags…
THe rear seat belts are non retractable, like a plane’s belt, manually adjust…
unsure about ESC, EBD , ABS

    rear windows are manual….

    no mention of spare tyre….

granted , it is dirt cheap to us malaysians, but ‘affordable’ to majority of indian consumer…

but we Malaysians have become accustomed to certain amenities…
