Avanza-Veloz-baru-new-facelift-2015

There seems to be a lot of activity going on at Toyota at the moment – earlier, you saw spyshots of the new Fortuner on a trailer, looking ready for launch; now, Indonesian motoring portal AutonetMagz has revealed a leaked photo of the facelifted 2016 Toyota Avanza. The seven-seater MPV is also set to be unveiled soon, at the inaugural Gaikindo Indonesian International Auto Show 2015 in August.

Yes, we’ve seen a picture of the front end before, but here you get to see more clearly how much the fascia has changed compared to the outgoing model. Both the front fenders and the bonnet have been reprofiled – the latter now takes on a sort of clamshell form – and the headlights are now horizontal instead of vertical in design; they looks a little like the ones on the previous-generation Lexus RX.

But hang on, you may be wondering – didn’t the previous photo have a different front end treatment from this? Indeed, it was different; here, the large chrome bar linking the headlights have been retained, but rather than a large Honda HR-V-like upper grille, there are much slimmer twin inlets. The fascia is dominated instead by an enormous Vios-like downturned lower grille, connected to the fog lights.

Toyota seems intent to further differentiate the two different looks available on the Avanza, as they are sold as two separate models in Indonesia – the sportier version this replaces being sold as the Avanza Veloz. Over here, the more aggressive bumpers and side skirts are fitted to the top-spec 1.5S variant.

We’ve also seen the rear of the car previously, with restyled tail lights (incorporating ornamental elements that eat into the tailgate) and a new chrome number plate garnish. Elsewhere, expect the current 103 PS/136 Nm 1.5 litre and 91 PS/117 Nm 1.3 litre VVT-i engines to soldier on, mated to the same five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions.
