Mercedes-AMG GT R faster than SLS Black, says chief

It’s no secret that Mercedes-AMG is developing an even more hardcore version of its AMG GT, known as the AMG GT R. While we’ve seen the pre-production test mule on several occasions before, Tobias Moers, chairman of AMG, has finally revealed a few exciting details about the coming model to Drive.

“The GT R stands for being better than the SLS Black — it’s faster on a track. This gives us a clear indication that there will be no slowing down with our products,” Moers said. “We need to bring things to market which you guys don’t expect. This is what we are thinking about.”

Unlike the SLS Black and its 622 hp/635 Nm 6.2 litre V8, the AMG GT R will feature a 4.0 litre biturbo V8 mill. Power figures for the GT-R’s engine haven’t been confirmed, but rumours suggest that it could get up to 600 hp. It is also said that the hottest version of the GT yet will have four-wheel steering and active aerodynamics, on top of weighing nearly 100 kg less than the standard model.

“Like the GT or GT S, it’s not a high price level like the SLS or the SLS Black, it’s a low price level and it’s competitive. This gives us a new chance to compete and conquer as well,” Moers said, suggesting that the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is a prime rival of its coming GT R.

The AMG boss also confirmed that the GT R wouldn’t be the last addition to the model’s family. “There is still room for other companions in the family. Let’s wait a little,” he said. “By the end of the year, you’ll know a little more about it.” Could we see an AMG GT Cabriolet, perhaps?

The standard car is already faster than the sls black series on top gear test track (1.17.5 vs 1.19.0). Wonder how much faster this hardcore version will be.
