Brabus fortwo, cabrio, forfour makes debut – 109 hp

smart BRABUS

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its trio of new Brabus smart cars following a teaser video that was released recently. Available in fortwo, fortwo cabrio and forfour versions, the Brabus cars are debuting all at once at the ongoing Beijing Auto Show today. Prices start at the 19,710 euro (RM 86,710) mark, and go up to 23,520 euros (RM103,523).

As this is a Brabus, all three smart cars now gain a bump in power. The 898 cc three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine now generates 109 hp at 5,750 rpm and 170 Nm at 2,000 rpm, which is 7 hp and 23 Nm more than before. The mill is mated to a six-speed twinamic dual-clutch transmission, which has a 40% faster response time and shorter-legged ratios.

The higher output is a result of several modifications done by Brabus. For starters, the fuel pressure has been raised by two bar and air supply to the engine has been optimised. A Brabus sport exhaust system is part of the upgrades as well.

The powertrain is fitted on all Brabus smart versions, and includes a Race Start function, which automatically sets the optimal rpm and clutch slip for maximum acceleration from rest. To use the Race Start function, simply release the brake pedal and floor the accelerator. “Launch control”, simplified.

Put to the test, both Brabus fortwo version will hit 100 km/h from zero in just 9.5 seconds. The larger forfour will accomplish the same feat a second later, but has a higher top speed of 180 km/h (fortwo’s top speed is 165 km/h).

Those concerned about efficiency will be glad to know that the Brabus smart cars boast a fuel consumptions figure of between 4.5 to 4.6 litres per 100 km (combined) under the NEDC cycle.

Other performance upgrades include a Brabus Performance sports suspension package that includes new springs and dampers. Now 20% firmer than before, a new anti-roll bar on the front axle also reduces roll tendency by 9%. The power steering also gets tuned for more aggression, while the ESP has been specially adapted to suit.

The smart cars also gain visual upgrades to suit its new persona. On the exterior, there is a body kit comprising new front and rear bumpers, dual exhaust pipes and Brabus Monoblock IX light-alloy wheels.

For added “Brabus-ness”, tag on the Xclusive styling kit that adds on Brabus sport seats with perforated nappa leather/black leather upholstery, a new Brabus instrument panel with a material mix of man-made leather/fabric, Brabus dashboard instruments with cockpit clock and rev counter, Brabus floor mats and ‘Xclusive’ badging on the mirrors and B-pillar.
